Porting the heads and having the valve seats ground are two different things. Porting means the part of the head that lines up with the intake is ground to match the intake holes to promote better flow.

Having the valve seats ground is done on the bottom of the heads where the valve seats are located. Basically all the excess material around the edge of the valve seat is ground so that when the valve opens (even the slightest bit) there are absolutely no flow restrictions around the valves themselves.

There is alot of HP to be gained in the heads by having both of these done. Grinding the valve seats needs to be done while the head is apart with the valves removed.

If you can afford it, have it done. You won't believe the difference. :eek2:

Well, I did the porting myself where I work, since I am a machinist. A friend of mine did the valve seat grinding at our shop as well.

So I really don't know what the going rate is for these.

Porting is easy to do. If you are not familiar with the procedure, I would not rush to do it myself, especially the valve seat job. My buddy told me it is very easy to ruin a good set of heads.
