What difference if any is there between a 71 and 72 GS hood with scoops?

I think he is asking the delta between a stock Skylark 71 and GS 71 hood. In this case, I dont think anything other than the sheetmetal for the scoops whereas 70 had different front lip on the Skylark hood....in theory, asthetics aside, you could section or graft a 71-72 hood scoop into a 71-72 Skylark hood and would look more correct than doing the same with a 70...

ok 71 scoop inserts are plastic 70 & 72 are metal the difference between those are the amount of open slots. 70 & 72 look the same but if your going concoarse people will know

I guess I'm wording this wrong. :Dou: I have a 1971 Skylark Custom and have found a 1972 GS hood missing the inserts but otherwise in decent condition for prep and paint. I would need to get the year correct inserts and what ever trim is missing. That said, is there a difference between the two years as far as it relates to inserts and trim. Will the hood be a direct bolt on with the existing hinges?

The hood itself is the same part number for '70-'72. The trim moulding on the front of the hood is different for each year so that it works correctly with the grille and headlight doors for each particular year. The hood inserts are the same for '70-'72. The hood scoop grille that goes in the insert is the same for 1970 and 1972. The 1971 is a unique, one year only piece. The grills and inserts are asymetrical; i.e. LH and RH. The seal plates on the underside of the hood are the same '70-'72. The air cleaner seals are the same on '70 and '71 but unique on the '72. Depending on the trim option of the car; some cars will have a metal trim strip at the back of the hood that presses over the lip and the corresponding trim on the top of each fender.

    Hope that helps.

    Eagleguy,
I have one of each hood, '70/'71/'72 Skylark & GS, for reference purposes.

The hoods will all bolt on to hinges the same way, but each year has noticeable differences:
'70 hood has no spring to assist latch release, '71 & '72 hoods do!
Ram Air parts are not all the same for '70/'71/'72 (different shapes & appearances)!
'70 has both LH/RH Rectangular parts (all parts must match for function): air cleaner/foam seal/seal plate/hood scoop/'70 Rectangular grilles
'71 has both LH/RH Rectangular parts (all parts must match for function): air cleaner/foam seal/seal plate/hood scoop/'71 Straight grilles

'72 has LH Triangular/RH Rectangular (all parts must match for function): air cleaner/foam seal/seal plate/hood scoop/'72 grilles (LH Triangular)
'71 front trim will work on '72 hood!

Not correcting anyone, only clarifying differences between all 3 years ('70/'71/'72) of hoods, after I just went out to the garage to look at them, to be sure.
