There should be no undercoating under the wheel area if that is your question. Color of the floorpan metal surfaces under the bottom are say chassis black. I have never seen a 70 with factory undercoating. We have owned two 70 QQs. My presumption is that someone applied this later. If you are speaking of under the carpet it was a thick jute.
Jim it's not undercoating it's a hard asphalt looking material it covers the wheel well seams some under trunk area and small amount in axal area.
Looks like it was sprayed on? Sounds like under coating to me but we will walk you through posting some pics so we can see it for ourselves. What makes you say it is not undercoating? (And I presume you are not talking about seam sealer?)
Load the pics on to your c drive, use the reply key and not the little window box, then the bowse key at the bottom which will take you to your drive to locate the pics and insert. In general they must be done one at a time. The only catch is you may need to send them to be resized if you do not have a program to do that.
Gang, Sounds like, to me anyway, 04AGSX is talking about the REAR wheel wells. There is, from the factory, undercoating applied in that area. It should be black in color. The floor pans should be chassis black with body color overspray. BTW, we're a friendly group here, first names (or more, if you are comfortable with more) are welcome! If you need help resizing a photo, you can email them to me and I would be glad to assist. email is: kg8s@arrl.net Oh, all the numbers off your body tag would be a big help. Enough experts here to decode for you. Added in edit: Oops...missed your name up there in one of your posts, Jim (I assume...unless you were thanking Jim Lore. See I really don't know what I'm doing, do I?? ou: )
Brad ours was taken off the road in about 1978 with 49K on the clock. His having 16K is the record lowest I have seen. How about even your protos?
Jim, Yep, lowest I've seen. The GSX prototype has in the mid 80,000 miles on it. It was an everyday driver for everybody before me (I bought it in May 1978). The GNX prototype has 1,700. The Black GSX we really don't know. It was showing 10,000 or so miles at the time of restoration, but I'm sure it was at least 110,000.
Take a lot of close ups Stan. Yours may be the lowest unrestored X. We might learn something from it. Do you have any paperwork? Brad who was on the post above owns the x prototype.
Stan, Here is a closeup of original factory undercoating on a 72 flint car, both sides are the same. You can also tell that it was put on after the car was painted. Duane
Here is a full rear view. I think this stuff is actually called Body Schutz, or something like that. Hope this helps. Duane
Here is another shot of a quarter I cut off a southern car. Also a 72 flint car. If you look close you can see the undercoating starts just outside of the body mount frame rail and covers the entire area to the outside. I think they used this stuff for sound deadening. Duane
Jim my gsx is in the prosses of being restored in 1977 i had an accident with it hit a cut out in an expressway exit 2'deep 2'across and 6' wide. no body damage except for a crack in the front spoiler, and bent the lower a arms and front wheels. had the car brought home and took it off the road. i pulled the front clip, the core support and battery box were rusted through replaced those. and procced to pull the rest of the car apart. that how it sat untill last year when i started to restore it. young and dumb (19). the picture taken was in 1976 yes it has the wrong hood tach, i have a yo repro.
