Wow, I just wasted my time on my taxes

I haven't had a chance to sit down and even think about it until this weekend (well, since February), and then something came up. Now, tonight I was just gonna bite the bullet and plow through it

But hey...what's this...can't claim more than $2000 for Social Security tax witheld?? What the?! I PAID 2451.18 dollars for that, plus another 573.26 for Medicare tax. I'm not even gonna get into the 4300 dollars in Fed tax they witheld (I make just under 40,000 dollars, um, I'm not a rocket scientist but that's over 10% right there...)

I am going to have to see my friendly H&R Block wease...er, accountant. I need the Magic Pen to whip this year's tax return into shape. Never had to to that.

I mean, with my rent on my apartment, rent on my other place, donations to charity, and impressive good looks and suave manner, I don't beleive I should have to settle for anything but a 1,000 dollar check and an apology from the Commonwealth and the Feds for over-taxing me. That seems fair :Dou:

Careful with the H&R Block people. They actually work along side the Guvment, the don't quite get you all the refunds that you deserve.

I had our company accountant do my taxes this year. This is the first year I can't just tele-file, so I decided to leave it to the pros. Well worth the $100 I paid the accountant!

My last check with 18 hours of overtime? $550, taxes taken out? $160. I could have just worked 2 days less!

    :puzzled:
What you are saying is that H&R Block cheat me out of money be purposefully ammending my tax return so that I do not receive my full amount? Or are you saying that as a standard procedure, they take out X amount of dollars for themselevs, and of that X amount, Y amount is a stipend for the government?

The first one is mucho-illegal. The second one seems like a standard accountant thing

Where do you get the info that Block will do this?

I had H&R Block do my taxes many years ago and got like 60 dollars back. The next year I took my taxes to a friend who is a CPA.He got me a few hundred dollars more from the previous year, plus around 500 for that current year.He informed me that unless you ask about certain things, they will not ask you, therefore you end up not getting your full amount.Doesn't matter to them, they get a flat fee. This was 12 years ago,but I still would not trust them.

Since my friend has been doing my taxes,I have received around 20,000 dollars back in refunds.

I guess it all depends on the person you deal with there... I've had H&R block do my taxes for the last 6yrs... for the past 3yrs, the person doing the forms actually took about 45-60 min. just to look for Loo.... um, I mean... deductions/writeoffs... :Brow: .

I guess having a house, wife, kids help alot... allways been very happy with our refund checks. :Brow: :Brow:

Yeah you kinda have to have all your ducks in a row before you hand your 2004 taxes over to ANY accountant.

These ducks you speak of. They are deductible, yes?

Also... If the cookie was consumed on your property, then you'll have to account for every crumb... since they are technically still yours.

Why do I want a cookie now :Dou: :Dou:

That's all well & good but now your friend will probably be liable for a hefty gift tax. :pp

I had a very similar problem with H&R Block many years ago. It cost me a lot of money, because they didn't ask about certain deductions that I didn't even know I could claim. I ended up paying the Feds $1200 that year :eek2:

We have used several services in the past with somewhat complicated taxes and Turbo Tax Premier has been our choice for 6 years now. Hands down winner in ease and size of return for us. Has made what was an unpleasant task into a yearly check up on how things are progressing.

Im glad my moms an accountant... since I do independant contracting and real work...

She worked at H&R block for a while as a hobby, but always refered people to herself and then did their taxes for free (especially the ones that take 5 minutes over the phone)... they didnt like that, and she didnt want to rip people off anymore :p

I have had the CPA who works at my company and lives at my house (that would be me) do the taxes manually for years. This year I bought Turbo Tax deluxe at Costco for $15, but then had to upgrade to Premium for another $20 to do some employee stock exercises I had.

I thought the software was pretty good and simple to use. It will ask you all the same questions that H&R block would.

Chris, I am guessing that your taxes aren't too complicated, since it sounds like you don't own a home or vacation property, etc. Don't know if had any stock transactions or not, but if your taxes are fairly straightforward, you could probably buy the Deluxe program and do them yourself.

Of course, like always, you have procrastinated until the last minute. :spank: Turbo tax does allow you to file electronically, which is nice. If you go through all the checklists in the program (that is how you find deductions) it will probably take a couple of hours, but it isn't hard work.

Just my $.02, which you can deduct from your tax bill. :beer
