Is there anything I should do to my heads(1965 iron 300) while they're getting rebuilt? Like hardened valve seats, bronze guides.
    Thanks,
    Philip

Big differences in opinions on the hardened seats. The local machine shop here that has been in business for 25 years told me not to waste my money for them on my last Nailhead heads he did. Buick heads hold up pretty good. Do a search on hardened seats and see all the different views on the subject. I like bronze guides and run them. Some porting would be nice if you have some spare change to spend.

I've been told to run only solid bronze inserts, is there any reason for this?
    Thanks,

For a stock rebuild with a stock cam, stock guides are ok, if you are stepping up in the cam area,or the guides ned to be replaced, I would go with bronze, they last longer. I would gp with seats on a 300 head, I have seen some seat recession on the small engines, Buick 350 and smalller , never on the big blocks . Jim Burek

Hey Jim, will your valvesprings #1006 work on a 65 300? Also should I get solid bronze bushings put in?
    Thanks,
    Philip

I was told by a machine shop that had been in business for many years, one of the most reputable shops, that Buick engines are notorious for receding hairlines... .um I mean valveseats. :) My 401 fell victim to this because I was too lazy to put lead substitute in EVERY time I filled up.

When I put a 300 in my Jeep CJ I had the seats upgraded....

I would probably do it since Jim says the smaller engines need them. I have had approx. 10 Buick heads done with none having seat problems even after running on today's fuels, but Jim has seen HUNDREDS, so he should know.

What cam are you going to run? If you go to bronze guides, I would use solid bronze guides, not just the thin bronze liners. Jim Burek

These are the cams specs. 270-degrees intake and 300-degrees exhaust. The 106-degree lobe centers, stock lift. Do you think I will be able to run power brakes?
    Thanks,
    Philip

What is the duration at .050? This came might be a little large for power brakes on a 300 inch motor. Jim Burek

To tell you the truth I am planning on buying the cam fro Pinhead64US, He hasn't been on here for almost a month, and he's the one I would have to ask. He said it was a REED stock eliminator cam.
    Thanks,
    Philip
