I heard that they were expensive, and they are illegal, at least in Illini, Fine is probably humougous.

Never used a jammer but I can say that I haven't gotten a ticket for speeding since getting my radar detector. They're only worth it if it's one of those big $$$ laser jammers and really only if you live in a majorly laser area.

    Valentine One.

Jammers are illegal, and police do not have a sence of humor about them!
If you want the best radar/laser detector made then try a "Valentine One" with directional bogey detection, bogey count, front & rear antennas. The only detector worth owning; it is a great tool.
The guy who invented the old Escort/Passport line of detectors (before they became cheap consumer junk) came to market with it about 12 years ago. His name is Mike Valentine. It is a bit expensive, but it is military grade and totally blows all other units out of the water. www.valentine1.com

Stay away from the rocky mountain radar stuff. They are a fraud. Car and Driver and others tested them and proved it.

As for the others, I'd like to try a good one. Besides, just like speeding, they are only illegal if you get caught!

Aren't radar detectors just a spiffy little device that notifies you someone else's spiffy device has already verified your speed?

If you don't want a speeding ticket, then here are some better options:
    1) Don't speed (I'll admit this one doesn't actually work 100% of the time).
    2) Have it thrown out on a technicality, such as lack of discovery.
    3) Have it reduced to a non-traffic violation.
    4) Just outrun the police. (Okay, so this one doesn't actually work 100% of the time either). (And for you MTV crowd, don't go do this just because I was joking and then try to blame me for your troubles).

Radar jammers are legal in some states.

I'd avoid a radar jammer. For one thing, if they use laser, radar jamming won't work. Plus you have to trust the manufacturor's claims.

Also, if they can't read your speed, or its obviously wrong, they can probably tell you're using something. That could mean the difference between a speeding ticket and tickets for every little thing wrong with your car.

You have about a second to change your speed between the first beep and the second and since the second wave will tell them a different speed, it's not really a verified speed. If you're traveling in a pack of cars, it'll pick up on the radar being used on the other cars and then you can slow down then as well. :TU:

There is also car bra's that absorb radar signals and scatter lasers. And there is license plate covers that do the same. And don't forget radar absorbant paint can be applied to the front of the car.

I've talked to the cops and generally for radar, you have to be within 200-300 ft. for them to get a good lock. Laser can get you about 2-3 times as far away.

There have been tests and some cars are more naturally resistant to radar than others because of their shape. The later RX-7's were great because of their curved noses. It was all but impossible to get a lock on them until they were almost on a cop. This is according to some of the police in the city I work for.

Since last year radar detectors and laser shields are illegal here in the Netherlands. The police now even has "radar detector-detectors", so they get a signal if the car in front of them has a hidden radar detector mounted in the grille.... :Dou:

There's a big court case going on now with a Cadillac driver involved, these new cars use some sort of radar beam to keep in safe distance from the car in front of them. And the police detected this beam and decided this was a radar jammer. GM Europe is also involved now and they're taking it to the highest European court. Just to make sure this will never happen again in any of the EEC countries.

Radar detectors work well if you get a good one that can filter out extraneous signals like burglar alarms. Escort model have surpassed Valantine now in many tests but both are good.

Having said that no type will help you if you top a hill and he has an instant on gun or unit that locks on close. So often though they are using it ahead of you on other cars and you can hear that.

A local occilator detector is what Erik is referring to as signaling police you are using a detector. They are used in Virgina where the use of radar dectectors is illegal.

    Radar and Laser Jammers
Jamming or attempting to jam a police radar gun is a federal felony with fines up to $75,000. So no, "its not just like speeding".

Isn't this all really pointless.... I thought cops could ticket you using their "judgement" on weather your speeding or not... applying one basic fine/points regardless of speed???

One of those "Old time" regulations that were never taken out since the advent of Radar.

Then again.... I could just be off...lol.

I try not to speed... it really doesn't get you there any quicker (on short trips anyway). I enjoy driving too much to try to get their any quicker...

Well, with all this new tech, FL has been using old tech.
Amazing, if you are ever on any interstates in FL, watch out for
two white lines 1/4 mile apart. Cops are in a helicopter and clock
you manually and then radio to patrol cars ahead who to pull over.
So, you can spend all you want on detectors and you won't detect
    the helicopter.

I quit using my radar detector, when I got hit with the state police "instant on" radar. It only emits a signal when they push a button to check your speed. By the time your detector goes off, its too late, and if the cop walks up to your car, and sees a radar detector........your getting a ti  cket!

I used a jammer once. I was going 83 in a 65 zone. Unfortunately the jammer made the cop think I was doing 141, so I got thrown in jail.

    Just kidding.

My buddy bought the Valentine. We have a mutual friend that was a local cop. He set up some tests using a radar gun. The gun read the correct speed every time. He called Valentine and said that my buddy wasn't setting up the test correctly, etc. and was reluctant to refund his money but eventually they did.

What are you talking about??? The Valentine does not change or mask the speed reading of a vehicle on Police radar/laser! It is a detection device only. :spank: :spank: :spank: :spank: :spank: :spank:
Your playing a little fast and loose with the facts there, arn't you pal?
