Tried a search and could find nothing. How much can you take off the block and heads before you need to start worrying about the head bolts being too long??

(.030 off deck and .005 off head for cleanup)

    Thanks

I have cut .050 off the block and .040 off the heads with no problems. I never measured anything, but if the bolts bottomed out then the head gaskets would have blown out.

Take a head bolt and screw it into the block without the head and measure the length from block to bolt head and then measure the thickness of the head bolt area of the head.

Well that was my first thought and then I started thinking about bolt stretch....but if you have done .090 then no reason to worry about .035....

Thanks for the info. Much appreciated.

I have heard of some being cut over .100" on just the heads.

If this was a problem then head studs would solve it.
