I wanted to ask a question on the torque specs,my `67 manual states 100-120 ft. lbs for head bolt torque, but I could not locate stock head bolts new so i bought ARP head bolts, there instructions say to torque to 130 ft.lbs, what should i torque the head to?its a stock 400 engine with stock cast heads. Thanks
The docs I've seen say 100 on all but the top centre 3 bolts which are 110lbs. I believe this is what TA reccomends as well.
The Buick head bolts are 1/2"-13. On ARP's web sight they provide a general bolt torque specification chart, which shows a torque spec of 111 lbs w/30wt oil or 88 lbs w/ARP moly lube for this particular bolt size. However, at the top of the chart they state that if special instructions are included with the bolt package you receive, then go by what the special instructions say. In this case ARP recommends torquing them to 130lbs, so I think that's the figure that should be used. Just be sure of what lube they say to use to achieve the recommended torque. Larry
You should be OK. Let us know how it comes out. BTW, you got those bolts pretty fast. Where did you end up buying them? Pretty soon I'll be needing a set of those and mains too for my next project. Larry
:jd: 100 pounds on the 4 extra bolts? They are only 3/8, trust me, you don't torque them to 100. They only go to 55 ft/lbs. And I quote from the TA sheet " Increment number 3, Torque bolt #'s 1,3,5 to 110 f/lbs, and all others EXCEPT 11-14 to 100 ft/lbs in sequence. The only thing that would be nice is for TA to specify if these torques are for bolts or studs, and what kind of lube to use, oil or moly grease. It does make a difference. Jim Burek P.A.E. Jim, That's a good point, since the ARP information for studs is different relative to the lube as you list.
