Heating system. Am I missing some part ?

    I cleverly waited for the winter to look at my heating system that never worked since I got the car.

    The blower fan works (on all speeds but the highest one. I will see this problem later).

    The wind blown is always cold and never hot (I'll try to fix that later too).

    Now the question is the following: in all positions of the AC/Heater control, the wind only blows at the bottom through the hole on the above pic. No way to get any air at the windshield or at any vent on the dash. I cheched all the air hoses which are OK.
    I have the feeling some door is missing on this pic. Any body has an idea ?

    OK closer look at it tells me you are missing the attachment that sits on the floor of the hump - which directs the air to your feet....nothing more.

    You have another problem....possibly a heater control valve? That is the valve that comes off the intake manifold and makes a 90* turn towards the firewall. It also has a vacuum fitting attached to the front of it.

    I'm basing this on a 70 Skylark, but I don't imagine the systems were different in a significant manner. I could be wrong.

    By "air hoses" I am assuming you are refering to the ducting (large diameter), not the tiny vacuum hoses. If you are refering to the latter, skip the next two paragraphs :)

    The switch that directs air to the floor, dash vents, and/or defrost vents is vacuum controlled (at least on my Skylark). The routing of the vacuum is a bit confusing - I've not redone mine yet.

    Basically, a vacuum hose from the switch goes through the firewall to a "canister" on the engine side of the firewall. Other hoses on the switch go to vacuum diaphrams on your heater box (and I think one behind the passenger kick-panel). These diaphrams control little doors to redirect the air-flow.

    I'm not sure which hose go where, but they are coded with color stripes. Check to make sure these are connected and in good shape (not cracked).

    The door flap that controls the air flow is connected via cable to the lever that contols the amount of heat. Make sure this is connected to the lever, and to an arm on the heater box. If the door is shut, you won't get hot air.

    Also make sure the vacuum hose to the heater valve (that Adam mentioned) is connected and in good shape. If the door works but valve is bad, you won't get hot air. You can bypass the valve (remove it and splice the hose together) and see if it gives you hot air.

    Finally, if the door and valve work, and you're not getting hot air, the heater core may be plugged.

    Feel the hose that should carry warm water to the core after the engine is warm. If it is cold the pneumatically operated heater control valve in the engine compartment (which diverts warm water to the core ) is not operational. This could be because the vacuum system has a leak or because the valve itself is defective, They are still available.

    If you have the flow of warm water going in and coming out of the heater core it is a door problem, either mechanical or vacuum related. If it is warm going in but not out you have a plugged core.


    You may have at least a second problem of the doors not operating or missing duct work that has been thoughtfully diagnosed above.
