I have a GM unit I will sell. Came off a built motor I bought that the guy had cam in WAY off. Still ran 10s in a Camaro with the valves kissing the pistons.
FYI- A stock gm HEI will not clear the gs air cleaner.. I've converted a pile of cars to HEI or other points elimination kits. I can honestly say the only difference I ever noticed was my wallet being lighter.
A less expensive alternative is the TA HEI - off shore manufacture but no reported issues. http://www.taperformance.com/proddetail.asp?prod=TA_691
You should also consider their Ready to Run small cap distributors, http://taperformance.com/products.asp?cat=465
I've just invested in a DUI. Read some excellent feedback. I also love the fact it is made in the USA. Awaiting delivery, takes a few weeks.
I bought a complete pertronix 3 distributor (stock appearing size) and love it. Got: Fulltime multi spark Rev limiter (e z adjustment) Advance weight limiters (e z blueprint) Vacuum advance option Pertronix 3 coil Pertronix plug wires Stock style black distributor cap
Running one of T/A’s HEI’s with zero issues using an MSD circle track rev limiter. Been 10.18/132 and not missed a lick.
When it's me, I find a decent Genuine GM HEI core, and then disassemble for cleaning, inspection, and lube. Recurve the centrifugal advance as needed. Install a quality "adjustable" vacuum advance, or braze/weld the slot of an OEM vacuum advance to limit travel. Add a fresh pickup coil, a low-resistance button/brush under the coil, new cap 'n' rotor. I will re-use the module if it's working OK; and they usually are. Same with the ignition coil. If it passes the usual ohmmeter tests, and will fire a spark-tester calibrated for HEI, I use it in preference to boutique junk made in China. God bless the Treasure Yard. I'll probably have under a hundred dollars in the thing when I'm done.
I have repair electronics all day long for a living for over 40 years and even though I run a HEI in my own car’s, you should not expect endless reliability out of any thing that is Solid state , in other words with semiconductors in its construction! To this very day when I go on a real long drive with my car’s there’s a tool box of course in the trunk along with a points Distributor , a plug in resistor and coil ready to swap out. call me nuts , but that’s me!
I highly recommend this setup. It clears the ram air air cleaner and no one's the wiser. Oh and Todd will hook you up. http://www.v8buick.com/index.php?threads/lectric-limited-electronic-ignition-conversion-kit.348396/
I'm not an HEI fan . I've had too many fail, either from heat soak or regular old module failure. The wire to the advance plate breaks from being worked back and forth, and the coils develop hot spots easy and go out of spec. And they're ugly. I prefer any of the point replacement kits that are out there use the Pertronix III in my cars and like them very much, no failures in 15 + years. I have had very bad luck with the Crane XRI though, none have worked right out of the box (for me, anyway)
DUI does not "make" modules. They buy them from some (offshore?) supplier, and put their sticker on them. The question is, how many actual manufacturers are there? Delco modules used to be made in Singapore Probably not any more, though. China has at least one manufacturer, and perhaps more than one. Taiwan is known for "chips" like would be used in these modules, do they make the entire module? I haven't bought a "new" module in many, many years. God bless the Treasure Yard.
