    I am at a crossroads -

    Here's what I have - a built th400 wih all the good stuff and 2 converters a tight 2500 stall and a 3200 stall.

Here's what I want - I'm going with all new suspension and disc brakes - the engine will be a 500 hp engine and I have 3.73's in a 12 bolt w/ all the goodies.

I am really debating about an overdrive setup. Would love to go with a stick shift setup, but don't want to hack up the floor. I was thinking about Gear Vendors setup - but we're looking at 2200 for the unit and I would most likely have to change the tranny to a SP setup. I thought about aq 200r4, but have seen prices for the setup getting in the $3000 range.

Now here's the kicker - I have access to a 700r4 that came out of a GN. The tranny is built with billet components - and have been told it'll handle whatever I can throw at it. It has the bellhousing adapter with it and a shortened driveshaft for a g-body - I have read on this site that people don't like the 700r4 because of a bunch of different reasons, but the price for tranny is under $700.00.

What should I do, I need help from the guys in the know. I want an overdrive - I want the performance I would expect from my th400, but I want the overdirve. Who is using what - any input you can give is MUCH appreciated.........

    HELP HELP HELP!!

    alec296 i need another buick

seems like a deal on the 700r4
if thats what your really likeing then go for it
just dont start the engine until the detent/tv cabe is properly set and
adjusted to the carb or you will have a 700rwiped out
the cable controls all the pressures and will damage stuff if not right
you might still need to shorten drivesshaft since you have a 12 bolt
depending on your chassis and use a 700/350 driveshaft yoke
im doing the same on my 350 car with a 700r4,3.73 gears
you might find that you dont need that much gear with a 700r4 trans
    with the deep first gear

The car is a convertible 1969 skylark w/AC so I am going to guess somewhere around 3900-4000 lbs :Do No:

The deep first would be great for :3gears:

    Is there anyone running a 700r4 behind a 455?

I think I've decided on a gearvendors unit. There are a couple of reasons why -

    1 - I can keep my well built th400
2- I don't have to order any new parts for putting any other tranny in (cables, brakets, dipsticks, driveshafts, etc)
3 - It will hold up to anything I can throw at it
    4 - it'll effectively give me a 6 speed tranny
5 - when I'm done with it (or the car) I can remove the unit

I've done alot of homework and it looks like I would end up spending at least 3 grand to do an overdrive tranny right. The GearVendors unit will run me 2300 and I won't ever have to worry about any adjustments (the TV cable stuff scares me to death).

I will have to massage the rear tunnel a little bit, but it is easily hidden by the carpet.

I'll keep you all posted as to progress. I will start with installing the th400 w/ 3500 stall - see how it goes, work the bugs out of a new combo and then install the gearvendors unit.

i am new at this. i switched a st300 to a st400 and am very happy. yes i would like better mpg also. but the price of the gear vendors and others i do not see any return. if i drive my car 3 to 5k a year the overdrive will only give about 2 to 3 mpg. maybe 4 to 6 at best. to me, you can buy a lot of gass for the money spent on a overdrive. unless it is a car thing and that is why we are here:Brow:

Be sure to put the 300 converter into the 400. If both converters are switch pitch, the 300 is higher stall and a little lighter weight.
The higher stall converter and 2.48 low gear will feel good when the throttle opens!
I did this to my 65 GS 400. Had to make adjustments to fit though.
