So I got a 68 firebird for basically $350....I traded a pair of l98 heads for it.....it's rough But solid where it matters....rockers and rear rails..spring pockets are nice and healthy I'm done with Buick "performance " I've always liked the first gen Maros and birds But can't decide which way to go....re skin it as a 68 camaro....or stay firebird??..... My hangup is the engine......I have vintage MINT... Tr2X tunnel ram...the exact same intake Grumpy Jenkins ran in his 68 camaro and till around 74.....my initial instinct was to build a car around this intake....all day two stuff....BUT....I've grown fond of the 68 Firebird styling and the 400 engines are pretty damn remarkable dare I say...more do than the 455 Buick.....there's PLENTY of aftermarket support... and tbh they make more power and a considered tq than our Buicks when comparably built....and they are sexy ass engines when all dressed out with a single plane and such....no idea what to do
But I figure the 70 GSX...70 455 4speed.. 71 stage 1 4speed and probably a 67 GS400 4speed should allow me some forgiveness
I'm leaning towards the Firebird with a NASTY 461CID PONCHO.....BUT then this will just be sitting.....I want this staring me in the face from the driver's seat ha
I mean.....come on....two 4500s....yellow accel wires.....MT valve covers...2.125 header tubes goin everywhere.....
More cars is the only the answer. Be a man... Edit- I'm assuming your familiar with the "Be a man" guy. He had his glorious 15 minutes...
Bad thing is I been trying to order a set of valve springs for a year for my GSX and here I am thinking of building a whole other car..ha..priorities have never been my strong suit
It needs basically most every piece of sheet metal offered but it's all dirt cheap....$1750 gets all new metal
Firebirds way less common to see than another Camaro. At least around here, can't swing a cat without hitting one. I'm not anti-Chevy either, I like Camaros and have a couple buddies that own one, they are just way more ubiquitous than Pontiacs. Aside from growing up driving Olds and Buicks, one of the reasons I prefer BOP are they are less commonly seen than their Chevy brethren. That white FB you posted is just beautiful. Keep it Pontiac.
Keep the Firebird!!!! Love the body style way over the Carmaro. My Dad had a new 67 Firebird in my senior of High School. Took his Firebird (he was in Vietnam at the time) to the Drag strip for the first time with my buddies and got a trophy. Loved the car and it was my first experience with a muscle car. I can just envision that bad ass Tunnel Ram sticking out of the hood and some enormous slicks on the rear and a romping cam, sweet to the ears. Just DO IT........ A NASTY 461 CID PONCHO in that light car would be amazing and super quick ..... Vet
Part of me is like just put the BBC in the Firebird and I know that was very common practice in the day....but I just don't think I can bring myself to do it
Ethan- parts are much more plentiful for the Firebird. Almost all of it matches up to the Camaro- in which EVERYTHING is reproduced. You'd be a fool NOT to do the Firebird... HOWEVER I know, for a fact, you have NO TIME for this one. You have no time for the other projects you mentioned. You still have customer cars that need work, correct? Ed's 69... and all of the other ones. Not pissing on your parade.... Just shedding some light on all of the other stuff....
