    Hi. I recently purchased a 62 skylark conv. that has a 231 v6 and trans from a 1976 skyhawk.
Per the VIN the original motor and trans was the V8.. why the change... don't know and didn't ask.

Problem is the prndl on the skylark is: PNDR
The 76 engine and trans is normal like new cars.

This causes the back up lights to be on if in Low (forward) and not work in in Reverse.

Can I get a different neutral safety switch that will mount on the steering column like the original or can I modify the original?

thanks for your help in advance!

Yes and what about the starter interlock; did they short that out? If the detent positions on the
column work OK, I would try getting a later column switch and attempt to adapt it. Hook up the
starter; it could be a problem getting it to work in both P and N. If that is OK, the R light switch
should be good. good luck, Bruce Roe

  3. Look for a neutral safety switch from a 68 and later General Motors A-Body with column shift. Needs to be one that had the THM350.
Check Ames Performance Engineering, www.amesperf.com 1-800-421-2637, Catalog G28 page 158.
    p/n M156L - 1969-73 Neutral Safety / Backup Light Switch, All AT (A & X-body) (AP).................................... 19.00/ea.

Ames is in the Pontiac parts business, but they have great prices, and lots of pieces/parts interchange with the Buick A-Bodies.

You need to re-position the reverse and starter lockout wires in the wiring harness connector also. Lisle wire terminal tool #56500 is a big help for removing
the male or female terminal from the connector body.

If the bracket on the new switch isn't compatible with the 62 Skylark steering column, it may be possible to use the bracket from the old switch with help from JB Weld.

Thanks so much for the advice! I'll be looking into the newer safety switch and trying that. I'll repost as soon as I get to it... hopefully with pictures etc... if if works, it might help someone else.
