I had some time on my hands so I figured I'd disassemble the air cleaner I have here that I'm going to have sandblasted. I sprayed some WD-40 on the clamp (that holds the plastic tube in place) and let it sit for about an hour. Instead of using a regular head screw driver, I decided to use a 3/8 socket and just be VERY careful, keeping in mind that this thing has more than likely NEVER been undone....well, now it's undone....and still connected...and the head of the bolt snapped CLEAN off!!! ou: :ball: :ball: :ball: Does anyone have ANY idea how the hell I'm going to get this thing off WITHOUT ruining the rest of the air cleaner?? See pic below...
Dremel tool? Maybe use a Dremel tool (or similar tool) with a cut off wheel on it and remove the part around whats left of the bolt. If you havent tried it yet get some PB Blaster it is way better than WD 40. Good Luck Bert
Thanks for the replies... I thought about bending up those two little tabs but I don't really have anything (I.E. a workbench) to secure the air cleaner to while I dig at them...nor do I have the right tools to do it... I really, REALLY don't want to ruin this thing...
The plastic piece with the part number 1231150 is the same for all air cleaners. I have the same one on my 71 LeSabre 350. So if you're worried about breaking or hurting that, you can easily find another good one.
Adam, Thanks for the offer! I have an extra as well and DON'T plan on ruining this one...I think.... My concern is the part of the snorkel the tube fits on. When I applied even a little pressure, the (metal) part started to separate from the snorkel...
Slice through both sides of the clamp next to the screw. then push down on the edges you cut through. Should release tension on the clamp and slide right off. Use a cutoff wheel to cut it should cut easily. Tim
Jeff, I'll need the clamp...DEFINITELY... PM me with your info and let me know how much you want... Thanks!!
I Win!! Since Jeff, aka 10sec 455 was nice enough to hook me up with the correct clamp, I figured I'd factor a hacksaw blade into the equation..... Oh yeah, where do I get a new thingy (not sure what it's called) that has the AC insignia on it??? And, the plastic tube survived as well..... :TU: I dropped the air cleaner body off at the sandblaster today....hopefully, by this time next week, I'll have some more input.... :Brow:
The ac delco thing is a thermostat and controls how much vacuum is in the air cleaner system (depending on temp) to run the hot air setup when engine is cold. GM has them, as do many parts stores. later Tim
Brett, part number of that air cleaner thermo is GM 6484243. Might be cheaper aftermarket, your call there (don't know). Not even sure if they ever go bad, or if car is garaged all the time they probably aren't needed anyway... later Tim
