    Hi all,

I posted this question before and received only one reply. I can't believe that on this board there are not more people who can offer a solution, so I am trying again.

I need some advice on how to fix a problem. It relates to my 72 GS. My left rear brake lights do not come on. However, the left rear signal lights work, the left rear tail lights work and the left rear four-way flasher works.

Since the first time I posted this question I have discovered that occasionally the left rear brake lights will come on.

So, what does it sound like the problem could be? Do you think it could be the stop light switch on the brake pedal, or do you think it is more involved than that?

I am by no means an expert, but I don't think it is the bulbs, as the signals and hazard flashers work fine. I also don't think it could be the ground, or else none of the lights would work...right? From what I can tell, there is only the one ground for the left lights and it is the ground on the inside of the rear bumber between the tail light housing and the gas door.

hi from what you have stated it is a bad t urn signal assy the if the parking lite works it is not the ground and if the turn signal wooks it is not the socket/bulb/or the wiring so the tuun sisnal assy has two set of contacts one circuit is run thru the flasher the other is in thenutral position thats where your problem is itis not making good contact in the nutral ///normal position ok disasemble try to clean or replace assy///id beta case of beer on it pete

It does sound like a bad turn signal socket. You may be able to clean the contacts, but often times, due to the age and deterioration, replacement is the only way to go.

If the sockets are separate, you can probably buy one at your local parts store. They come with a pigtail of wiring, so you can just splice it back into the original harness. It's possible here that the wire color will not match exactly, so you'll need to use a test light. Not hard to do.

Bad grounds will do the craziest things, but in your case it doesn't appear to be that. Nor your brake light switch, since your right brake light works. I don't think those circuits are separate.

    Brake light problems

    HI Pete and Reid,

Thanks for the reply. I will look into the switch assembly ASAP. Is it located just behind the steering wheel, or is it further down into the bowels of the steering column?

To remove the horn cap on the sport steering wheel, does it just pull off, or is it a twist and pull?

    Cheers

    been there done that

My turn signal switch "sticks" a bit on left turns. If I make a left and don't give it a little "nudge" then my left brake lights quit working. I figure I'll replace the cancel cam assy when I get the time but for right now it works ok for me... If the cancel cam doesn't do it then you will need the switch. My recommendation is try wiggling the turn signal switch a bit and see what happens with your tail lights.....

    regards

you may find when you remove the steering wheel to inspect the turn signal switch that the contacts (little brass rivet lookin do-hickeys) for the black/yel wire needs cleaning.

    keep us posted.. :)
