I'm not a computer expert by any means. I did see a program in Office Depot that came with a USB cable that would do what your asking. If I remember right it cost somewhere around $60.
hub= $25 2 Cat 5e cables=$5 to $15 depending on length Share your folders that need copied/moved. depending on the size of the data.....USB memory sticks are great and easy to use. We use them instead of lugging laptops back and forth from work. I think the program land shark is referring to is called LAPLINK. We have that at work. I've NEVER gotten it to work right.
If you have network adapters on both (RJ45- looks like a big phone connecter plug) you can use a single Cat 5 crossover cable. It has to be a crossover and not a normal Cat 5 cable. Serial ports can be used to transfer but are very slow. You can use USB to transfer files but you will need a special adapter cable. Unless you have access to any of the above mentioned, the easiest way to transfer files is to burn everything onto a CD and transfer the burned files over to the other computer.
If you go with the crossover cat, get it at CompUSA or a similar computer store. When I bought one I found Best Buy wanted twice as much for the same length of cable. Then you'll have to set up one computer as a host. Assuming you have windows, you can set up one machine as an "ftp" server (comes with 2000/XP). Then use Internet Explorer on the other one to access that server and put the files there by dragging and dropping. You'll also need to find your IP address - easy. We can give more help when you let us know how you intend to transfer (for example, network adapter in each machine, so you'll use crossover cat, or however you are going to do it).
Do you have a CD burner on the one you want to transfer from? Might be another way to send info it you are doing a one time data dump. Mark
Was going to suggest this or a Zip drive. Also, what 1965 Land Shark mentioned, both are probably the easiest ways to transfer data.
If you want to just transfer the data over to the new drive then I would set the old drive for a secondary drive and piggy back them in the new computer. You can transfer data and you don't have to purchase anything for this process. All you need is a little computer knowledge.
Cool - that way you can network the machines when on the net and use them both. Let us know if you need help setting up the machines to xfer your data via the hub.
