Well ive got 140k on my engine and i've got a mid through high rpm nock. Sounds like its coming from the right side of the engine. My dad and i think its a rod and rod bearing? Maybe some of you guys know what it is. We are contemplating having the motor pulled out and the following done.

-Replace Piston Rod, Rod bearing, End cap
    -Ring Job,Honning Cylinder walls
    -Valve Job and Valve Guides

Me and my dad figure if your going to do all that we want to up the compression. We'd like to know if you can get pistons or thinner gaskets were we would up the compression from stock but not past a 10:1

So can i even find higher compression pistons or gaskes for my 72 350 buick engine, and where if so?

And secondly can i even find valve guides and Rods and Rod bearings for my 72 350 Buick Engine and where?

I really dont see it as an option to put a chebby engine in it, i realize by doing that you'd all hate me. Im leaving for vacation tomorrow so i wont post anyhting till i get back. I really aprechiate any help on finding this stuff for me and the car shop i go to. Thanx

Rod should be a double knock, shouldn't it? Hits going up, hits coming down: Clunk-clunk

I had a single knock last year. Main bearing(s). Not fun. But hey, I got to rebuild the engine in the snow

For higher compression, I think you'd rather start looking at heads than pistons

I wouldn't hate you if you put a Chevy mill in it. I wouldn't do it personally, but it's your car, not mine. I don't care if you put a Saab engine in it as long as you're happy with the car. Tell all the guys who complain about what engine is in your car to flip the bill for a new Buick engine and you'll gladly put it in

Good luck, I feel for you. tearing down the engine's no fun. I'd inspect and plastigauge all bearings if I were you

This guy knows what you're going through:

    Jake,
Mid to high RPM knock??? Are you sure you aren't hearing the the engine detonate? Do you have an oil pressure gauge on the motor? If not, get an Autometer mechanical, no Buick engine should be without one.

You can get anything you need to rebuild your Buick 350 from TA Performance 480-922-6807, http://www.taperformance.com/

    or Poston Enterprises, 1-800-635-9781 http://www.postonbuick.com/

If you use the pistons listed as 10.2:1 in your 72 350, and keep the stock deck height, you'll have around 9.5:1 compression. By surfacing the deck, you can get more compression. Any good machine shop can do this for you. I would ask around on this site for a nachine shop in your area, familiar with Buick motors. THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT! You don't want them to build it like a chebbie, and some of them will because they think they know it all, and don't listen. Buick engines need to be built the way Buick built them, with tighter bearing clearances.

If you haven't joined your local Buick club, do so, it can be an important resource for you. Click this: http://mi-buicks.com/
You can e-mail the folks at the bottom for a machine shop recommendation, Roberta is a member here, I'm sure she can help you.

just got back from vacation today. Thanx for the websites i've found everything that i may need for them. I've been talking with my dad and we still think its rod nock. The car got ran to low on oil before we got it and we think thats what started the problem. It sounds deep in the engine and it is kinda a double nock. We said he had the same problem on his GTO back in the day and thats what ended up being worng. But a funny thing happened when i got back. First one of my friends jsut bought a buick 455 motor to rebuild for fun, hes got no car to put it in lol. And secondly my other friend engine has developed the same problem as mine but about twice as worse. The biggest reason i dont wana put a chebby in it is becuase i've got all original stuff on that car and liked to keep it. It wouldnt be as much of a buick to me with a diffrent engine in it.
