:Dou: I installed my MSD 6AL over the weekend. It's wired per the instructions to a MSD mag pickup distributor. I'm actually running an ignitionman mag pickup dist. Everything has been great for the last three days...I've put 40 or 50 miles on it. So today I guess I decided to screw something up and routed the old wire that was hooked to my old Coils neg terminal to the neg terminal on the new MSD 8200 coil in hopes that my stock tach would start working again (it worked until I installed the MSD 6.).:Dou: Ok so now for the problem....It didn't make the tach work so I turned off my ignition and nothing happened...the car continued to run!!! I removed the old neg coil wire but it was still running!!!!!!!! the key had no affect and worked perfectly until I hooked that wire to the new neg coil terminal:Do No: Oh and My stock "GEN" light is on now!!!!!!!!!!! I had to pull the coil wire so the motor would stop, reconnected it and started it again and it still won't turn off....HELP!!!!!!!!!

There is a diode that comes w/ the MSD6al to cure the run on problem. If you need the diode rating and instructions, let me know. I can email a copy of the directions to install the diode. I do know it goes inline with one of the alternator wires. Brian

I should have it if it came with the box, I keep everything...I'll go grab the directions and check it out. So this is something that happens? It didn't start doing it until I screwed with the other wire? I'm feeling pretty sick right now thinking I did something else so thanks a ton for your reply.

Brian, I found the diode and the instructions. Just so I'm clear, it looks like I follow the diagram for GM 2 wire alternators? Mine is a stock replacment unit wired just like the original.

Rick, I sent you a pm. The tach is wired to the tach output on the MSD box. The only wires that go to the coil are the orange and black MSD coil wires, that's it. The box supplies over 400 volts to the coil. I hope you didn't fry your voltage regulator or alternator. Is the generator light still on?

Yep, still on...I'll install the diode and if it doesn't go off I guess I'll replace the Voltage Regulator first, if that doesn't work I guess I'll have to buy that chrome alternator I've wanted:laugh: I just hope I didn't fry the MSD box!:Dou:

Just like Larry said, there is a totally seperate wire just for the tach on the MSD 6AL

I just put the 6a box and pro billet distributor on my car. I had run on right from the get go. I tried the diode and it didn't work. Called MSD and ended up putting that ballast resister on. That took care of it. Check it out on page 9.

Installing the diode fixed it! Thanks guys!:beer Also I hooked the evil wire to the MSD box tach drive and what do ya know, it worked!!!funny how the tach drive made the tach work who'd have thunk it? Very cool Gents thanks for the help. :TU:

I have a chrome alternator that I am not using. It is for external regulator. How did you end up timing that thing?

Hey John, hows it going? After I got it so it would shut off again I did get it timed pretty well I'm at 16 deg initial and I'm only guessing at the total but it's close to 34. I hope I just cooked the Voltage regulator. Maybe I can buy that chrome alternator from you? Are you still going to the show on Sunday?
