I picked up a "display model" Powermaster 200 amp alternator recently. Anything I should watch out for or should this be a direct swap? It's externally regulated.

I have not heard of anything above 100 amps for an Externally regulated alternator  .

Being that it is externally regulated, it must 10SI type design.

Would like to see it. Can you post a picture?

It's the #57806; now that I read the description it does appear to be internally regulated-- my mistake. In any event, it's overkill for my application I think (plus I'd need to change the pully). I bought it while at Summit's retail store since it was relatively cheap...

Edit--- I read the FAQs on Powermaster's website and answered my own questions... what a dope! :puzzled:

That unit has more amps at idle than mine does at hiway speed! 120 Amps at idle! You would only need that much power if you had every electric option avialible, quite a few other "go fast" electronics, and a very good stearo.

I would think it would be over kill for the average person.

But I did install a 100 amp unit on my Skylark and only have a few "go fast" electronics :Brow:

I received a reply from a tech at Powermaster that this particular unit is not even set-up to use a standard V-belt drive-- good thing I didn't bother to change the pulley. I do have aftermarket stereo plans but nothing that will require this degree of output.

Looks like this unit will go in the "for sale" section here or become an expensive doorstop!

Been waiting for an Alt. like this.

When I use my blinker, combined with my headlights on, I can here my electric fuel pump's tone go up and down with the blinker. Always have wondered if this effects fuel pressure very much. Sorry if I missed this in the previous post, but where would I find this alternator? I live in the Wa. Seattle area. Thanks, John Biggs :)

Jegs and Summit carry Powermaster products, there are probably others as well--or you could buy mine! Retail is about $389 though this one would be considerably less. PM me if you'd like.

Actually, the 10SI is an intenally regulated unit. The externally regulated unit is a 10DN. No, there are no precautions involved other than being sure the battery is a good one. The higher output on this unit will fry stuff very quickly if the 200 amps get out of hand. One thing to remember too is that typically, higher output units have a limited output at idle and speeds below 1000 rpm. If the alternator light glows dimly at idle, but goes out at higher speeds, this is likely normal. Ray
