How difficult and expensive would it be to make a high performance 300 cid Buick engine. Once my 65 Skylark goes out for paint my dad and I are going to rip the engine apart and rebuild. What could I possibly do besides a 4 bbl setup, bore increase, and port jobs.

300 V8 bored 0.30 over, ported aluminum heads, aluminum 4 barrel intake, Carter AFB competition series carb, high rev lifters, dual valve springs, chrome molly high compression pistons, pushrods, rings, 35hp over stock 4bbl cam, balanced crank, high energy MSD ignition, Pertronix, 9mm wires, thermal coated headers (not in this picture), 2.5 inch aluminized exhaust, high volume oil pump, etc etc. I have it backed by a TH350 with a stall converter and shift kit. It's no stage 1 455, but for a small block, it's very streetable and goes like hell.

    High Performance 300

I did most of the same modifications to my '64 300. Without the cost of headwork, I spent $1800 on parts and machine work. Would I do it again, knowing what I know today? Yes, but only after upgrading the rear end to a 12-bolt or later model 10-bolt with a performance gear ratio.

I agree that swapping a TH350 or later 4-speed auto or stick trans is necessary to get the most from the overall package. The 300 has a long and relatively flat torque curve. The more you work on the mechanical application of power, the more efficient you package will be.

I'd also focus more attention on the ignition system and install some type of HEI instead of trying to upgrade the points system.

My opinion is that the 300 is an excellent engine for hi-performance street use. It's easy to keep cool and it has a nice exhaust note. And, like most Buick stuff, it's different. Just be prepared to educate parts suppliers and vendors who are not Buick specialists.

Final opinion, based on info we receive from Buick racers, it's definitely possible to get a 64-65 Skylark with a 300 into the 12-second bracket. But like the rest of us, you need to work on the heads and intake situation.

    HiPerf 300

    1. look for thread on "wildcat heads", a great addition to a 300, original '64 aluminum heads are getting hard to find and don't breathe well.
    2. '65 and later cast iron heads can be improved, be careful , these heads (apparently) designed to induce swirling intake charge, don't spoil that.
    3. Forged buick 350 pistons work, 300 will usually take overbore to 3.8"

    more 300 hiperf

    4. Camshafts abound, be aware the cam will have to work with the other modifications
    5. SBC 2" journal 6" rods work- refer to posts about Dan Legrou and D&D for specifics
    6. Iron 4bbl intakes work well, or refer to posts about Sean Etson and his 300 intake
    7. Everything runs better with a blower - until its blows up. Don't overdo the boost without making engine stronger
    8. without a spark, all this does nothing, pertronix with multiple spark box does wonders without bulk of HEI

Matt! Yours looks like it will go like hell, great looking engine compartment there. I especially like the 67 air cleaner-fits right on the edelbrock too. I'd like to see the rest of the car -(edit)
Ok, I checked out the other pics @ pre 68, looks great!

Matt, where did you find a hi perf intake for that 300? And what ignition set up did you go with? Did you get a full ignition kit? What kind and where from? I'm interested in doing some improvments to my stock 300. I figure intake and ignition would be a good place to start. While I'm at it, a cam upgrade might be in order. Looks like you've found a good combo there (overkill for me) but you would have alot of good insite for someone like me looking to add some horses without having to buy a new barn. I've looked on the Poston site but I can't find anything for the 300.:)

Do Poston finally have a web site? Got the link? Their catalog had loads of 300/340 stuff in it last one I got was about 2 years ago though.
