hood clearance problems

    put a 70-71 Buick 455 in my 86 cutlass and i am having trouble finding an air cleaner assy or combo that will fit under the stock hood. any hint or tips would be appreciated

    You probably need a "drop-base" air cleaner base. You can drop the air filter about 2". Then just get the tallest filter that will fit and still leave at least 1/2" clearance. Probably a 3" or possibly 4".

    Lots of stuff on this. I used the Corvette drop base. It is a 2 inch drop, got it on evil bay. You need more than a 3 inch element to feed a healthy bbb. For the Regal check this link

    You have to look through the link for Larrys air cleaner mods. He is running mid 11's so I know he is getting enough air.

    Another tip. The larger air cleaner assemblies will touch the hood at the support frame found at the back of the hood. If you trim 2" from this you will find some extra clearance. the ribbing in the middle of the hood is not terribly structural anyways and many folks just remove it.
