    Jim,

Oops! Yes, a typo for sure. I meant 320, of course. Thanks.

And Grimm is correct; the old Chevy style apparently has much more of a drop than your typical speed-shop variety.

Jim, would I not pick up a liittle sharper throttle response, almost equal to a dual-plane intake, if I could fit a 4-hole (not open) one-inch spacer between the Q-jet and the SP-1 intake?

    Thanks again to all.

I don't think throttle response is going to be an issue here at all. I;m running a coollrunner on my 455 with iron heads and a big cam, throttle response is not a concern, this thing is in no way lazy down low. I f you really want throttle response though, dump the qj and go with something like a quick fuel or pro form, just my personal opinion. The qj's are a little weak on the primaries since they are so small.
P.S., I did know what air cleaner you were reffering to, I think year -one might have those but they are not cheap,, I figure a more readily available one will still give you enough clearance, No offense taken here from Grimm :TU: . I am running a local store bought drop base on my 65 with coollrunner intake and a 1/4 carb spacer and a 3 inch element, it's tight, but it fits. Jim Burek

    Jim,

Thanks for your reply. I will prolly call you about the advantages of the other carbs.

You're right, I don't want to spend big bucks for a drop-base air-cleaner from Year One if it can be avoided

. Hard to believe that we can't get a Chinese/Taiwanest repro somewhere.

Anyway, I am correct in that there are both 1" and 2" generic drop base air cleaners? If so, where can one buy the 2"?

    Thanks to all.

    Hector,

thanks so much for the info. Was there a specific vendor, or are they sold by multiple sources?

    Thanks again.

Craig, when Tom posted the picture of his engine with the base on the carb,I went on Ebay and found one for $30.00 + $9.99 s/h with Buy it now :TU: .Jumped on it,when my engine goes back in the car I would like to keep my 14"x4" filter,I'm adding a 1" spacer and that base has more drop than mine.I think that it was an Ebay store, the name is Restoration-Warehouse.I did a quick check and didn't see any more listed, you may want to contact the guy anyway as he may have more.Good luck.

Just to let you know I just got one of the bases and it is very nice. It works great with a q-jet (many aftermarket bases have problems with the accelerator pump lever.) I have had clearance issues ever since I went to an SP-1 and this pretty much solved. it. I can now run a 3 inch air cleaner (still not enough room for a spacer though.)

well on stock i had well over 2" of clearance, i was going to get a 1" spacer and a 3" element.

but withj the SP-2 i will probably run a 3" and a small spacer with that drop or a 4" with no spacer, maybe even a spcaer if it will fit.

how much is the drop on the big block one anyway?

I think that the Wildcat has a lot more clearance than a GS. I really picked up some airflow when I switched from the foam Edelbrock air cleaner. I now have a problem running out of gas and will have to get the new fuel pump and lines put in. I doubt that the four inch is going to be needed on most motors. The three should be more than adaquate.

Thanks to the people that gave the link on the base, I have been looking to solve this problem for a year.

I run the K&N Flow Control air cleaner with the SP-1 (no spacer) on my Wildcat, can't remember what model, though. It's so close to the hood - even with a solid left motor mount - that I had to trim one stud from the chrome hood spear to make it work.

Yeah when i measured for a spacer i had 2"+ maybe around 2 3/4, but that was with the hood pads in, so i figure i have about 3-4" of hood clearance.

another great way to sole that problem is to cut a 14.5" hole in the hood :D

anyone know the actual amount of drop from carb mount to air filter mount?

2" as opposed to 1 & 1.5 for speed shop models.

oh ok, so that basically counters the 2" raise from an SP-2 and sets me right at stock again, i can run a 4" element and a 1" spacer then.

I checked mine vs. the old drop base that I have, the old one has 1" and the BBC has 2" of drop. The air tube is only tacked on,came off in a couple of minutes aided by a Dremel tool. The Q-Jet tang fits my Holley fine so no modification was required. The only problem that I have now is that it will hit my idle solenoid and my throttle cable bracket,I'll make a 3/8" spacer and I'll have all the room that I need.Nice part for the money in my opinion :TU: .

how do you plan on covering up the hole that was the pcv valve?

I'll grind the lip even with the base and make a round patch out of the same gauge sheetmetal and tig it in place.
