Hood Tach, stock or not?

I am getting ready to buy a '70 GS Stage 1 from my parents and was looking at a hood tach at one of the links from the Stage 1 Registry page. The tach that I saw were said to be new and the original tachs that were installed by the dealers. I have a couple of questions about these:

    1. Were the tachs, in fact, installed by the dealerships, or did they come from the factory?

    2. The one on our GS actually doesn't say "Buick" on it, it says "Pontiac". My uncle (who owned the car from 1973-1977, until my parents bought it) always told me that they all said "Pontiac" because they were borrowed from the GTO part lineup. Does this sound correct, or did Buick really have their own tachs?

    Thanks,
    Scott

    Not!

For '70 hood tachs were part of the GSX factory package along with a bunch of performance and cosmetic goodies. They came with "Buick" silkscreened onto the faceplate. Your uncle may love you like the nephew you are, but he is incorrect. Dealers are known to do funky stuff and may have indeed installed a hood tach. Whats to do - drill a big hole and two little ones and slap it on - no big whoop!

The tachs from Pontiacs are VERY similar, but not the same. I've heard that the original ones were pretty finicky and someone may have put the Pontiac one on as a quick fix.

It won't be hard to replace it with a proper or proper reproduction one.
