Hot Idle Compensator

I suspect my answer will be in my chassis manual once it arrives... however:

My Qjet rebuild kit came with a hot idle compensator seal. (no comments on where it currently is installed - read accelerator post I had)

The question is how do I know if I need a hot idle compensator. The Haynes and Doug Roe books both reference that this should be on 67-late 70's Qjets. Where I am 99% sure it should be on my carb, it is not. (rear of carb in casting 2 screw holes remain. No cover, no Bi-metal strip, no screws.

Its a 72 Buick 350. I want to confirm I should be searching for a set up.

The books state if there is a problem with this, the engine would idle rough and stall. I assume one might be able to compensate with the mixture to offset the rough idle. (then I assume the drivability would be poor)

Problems I had prior to disassembly (timing was a few degrees in advance of factory spec - power timing has not be done... yet):
Bog at acceleration (front vacuum break linkage does need and will be getting adjusted)
    Engine seemed hotter
Difficult to set a good idle speed.

Once carb is reinstalled I will
    1. Power time per this board
    2. most vacuum lines are being replaced (will double check for leaks)
    3. Use many of the readings post carb disassembly and get true analysis of issue(s). (assuming I don't do worse...)

    GStage1 Always looking for parts!

All the Buick carbs I have do NOT have the hot idle compensator. I believe that was a Chevy item.

Is the casting drilled for a compensator? If it is, you need one. If it isn't (like most) you don't.

Basically, do you have a huge vaccum leak at the compensator port? If you do, you need a compensator. If not, the casting wasn't drilled for it, so putting one in will accomplish NOTHING except make the vendor happy.

    Carb is currently off engine.
Panic for nothing from previous posts. No it is not drilled. (assuming it would be drilled in the port where the seal would fit. Holes for the cover are not threaded. :Dou:

    Thanks -
