hot starting...or not quite

Alright guys, what's going on with my car? It's a '65 Lark, 300-4V, ST-300, 75,000 miles with Edelbrock 1406 600 cfm carburetor. When it's been sitting, it starts hard and pushes black smoke out the exhausts. I've been back through the carb and everything looks good. I changed the float needles and seats. Since it's pushing out the smoke, it seems to be something in the carburetor, but what? I may check the compression to make sure the cylinders aren't low, but that doesn't seem to be the problem. Any help would be appreciated! Thanks!

Black smoke = to mush gasoline or to little air!
    Air filter clogged?
    Wrong float level?
Is the choke working ok? Maybe it is engaged to long or to early (when engine or weather is hot)

    OK...
    Air filter's clean
Floats are at spec according to the carburetor owner's manual
Choke is wide open when this problem occurs...

I may try lowering the floats, but they didn't seem high...I'm at a loss...any other ideas??? Anybody familiar with Edelbrock/Carters?

To be more specific...it starts hard when it's been sitting after running. It happens after sitting anywhere from 5-10 minutes to 4 hours or so. It starts immediately cold....I think gas is getting into the engine after sitting, but except for the needles/seats, which I've replaced...I don't know where it could be coming from...

    Another thing to check

If you dont have a bad mile/gallon number (or even if you do)you my have to high gas pressure almost on the limit folding the carb when running.
Then you stop, heat builds :Dou: an even higher pressure an now it floods. :ball:
OR the floats do not float right perhaps they stared to soak up gas inside.
    Just trying to help

I know that if this was a Quadrajet, I'd say the float bowl is draining and gas is puddling in the intake. Don't know if this can happen with the Edelbrock design. Sounds like it.

Well after talking to a few people, including the Edelbrock tech line, it seems like I need a heat dissipator between the carburetor and intake manifold because gas is boiling over...I ordered one and will be able to put it on the car after work tonight...I hope it works (knock on wood). Anyway, thanks for the input guys.

Well I added a Mr. Gasket 1/4 inch heat diffuser plate and it's better but not totally cured...See new post (300 intake manifold).
