My distributer functions great, its got all new internals, cap rotor, condensor, etc... but when i was trying to fine tune the timing, i found the distributer is seized in place. I pulled off the bolt that holds it in place but still wont turn. Any ideas? ITs kind of in a tight spot, surrounded by wires hoses and the vacuum advance mechanism. Would be nice if i didnt break those Any help appreciated.

I had the same problem when I first bought my 71'.The shop took a pipe wrench to the distributor shaft and sprayed some penetrating oil around the base and let it sit overnight. With a little,"gentle persuasion" it finally broke loose. Then it was replaced with an HEI unit.I have learned since working in the oilfield that pipe wrenches can be your best friend sometimes. They can just get the leverage that other tools can't do. :Brow:

    stuck distributer

There actually is a special tool for this, but I havent seen one in years. The old Ford Y block used to be the worlds worst about the dist sticking. What is holding it is varnish from the cooked down motor oil. PB blaster, then pry, under both sides, up. in a straight line. Be carefull. some dist s are aluminum and some are cast steel. the steel ones are tougher.
lacquer thinner will dissolve the varnish, but it is extremely flammable and it will take paint off. Gently tap with a brass hammer. put lac thinner in a oil squirt can to minimize the fire hazard. then sq uirt it at the joint with the block. the old pipe wrench is some times help full.

Pipe wrench eh? Yea mine is a 71 as well. I'm still fairly inexperienced with the getting down and dirty stuff, mainly cuz i lack alot of the tools and facilities, but anyhow. I have all sorts of penetrating fluids i can put on there, but i was worried that it would damage seals or something, will definately spray some in there. One more thing. A pipe wrench is pretty monstrous. At the very top of the base , its kind of square so i was thinking about putting an adjustable wrench to get a good hold on it, but the space is really tight. How did you get ur pipe wrench on it? So far, the only thing we've tried is prying with a screw driver (but it was too much sstress on the vaccum advance) and griping it with a vice grip, and hammering on the handle to make it turn. But the vice grop keeps coming undone.

You might try removing the fan if you feel comfortable doing it.Nothin to it really, pretty straight forward. That way you can get some good leverage. If you don't have a smaller pipewrench you can try working the crescent wrench back and forth til it loosens up.With a pipe wrench you can get it around the shaft and gently try to pull up on it while you turn it back and forth.Don't get too crazy with it though.

    sounds good

yea i might pull the fan out, but when i meant its tight, i meant the space around the shaft, with the hoses, and the block, its hard to imagine a pipe wrench fitting in there. Any how ill give it a shot. Thanks for the help.
