theres one on a used car lot down the road from me , i haven't stopped top look at it yet but when i went by the other day the price on the windsheild was 14,995 , which seemed cheap to me ? i'm guessing its a clone ???
After '68, you need papers to prove that it is original, unless it has the numbers matching engine. The Vin will start with 136, which denotes a V8 Malibu. Then the build sheet, if its still there, will most likely be behind the back seat. Its probably a clone though, either that or there is nothing to proove its an SS, making it only as good as a clone. If not, GRAB IT UP!
Unless you get lucky and it was sold in Canada... I also believe an SS Chevelle in '70 *had* to have the F41 suspension, which meant sway bars front/rear, as well as the boxed rear control arms.
thanks guys . haven't seen it yet though when i was going by the place the other day in my truck they had the hood open and i could barely see the engine , meaning it looked like a small block and then i noticed on another pass by no engine callout under the SS emblem ... me thinks poorly done and overpriced clone , its been on this lot for awhile and with all the drooling idiots scooping up anything and everything for INVESTMENT purposes my ASSesment is probably correct .
Availible in 1971-72 was a 350 cid smallblock Chevelle SS and they had no cid callouts under the SS emblems.
1970 chevelle SS In 1970 if it were an SS it would have a tach in the dash, 12 bolt , rear end and disc brakes on the front, just a few easy things to check out
It's usually the car with crank down windows, a manual seat and no air conditioning crossing the finish line after the 455 Buick.
Dealer invoice, build sheet or production sheet! Not a Chevy guy, but you need some documentation showing what it is. Then some owner history on top of that. Patrick
No tach or gauge package was required to be an SS not a hole bunch of those. The SS package did require the round face speedo instead of the rectangular swept face speedo of the standard chevelle. jim
A few things to look for. open the door and look for evidence of a upper body molding there should be a welded up hole if was a malibu.steering shaft has a bolt like a 455 gs has. car should have no rocker moldings or evidence of them look for holes under the rocker panel. frame connectors all 70's have them.round dash pod with no seat belt light.another easy tell tale look at the kickdown on the gas pedal for the 400 turbo.no kickdown no ss unless its a 4 speed.
The steering shaft with the bolt was a big block part only. The small block cars did'nt have them. If you go to the Chevelle forums, they have a pretty good article on SS identification.
WHen I was about 22 the neighbor next door to me had a convertible Chevelle in his garage he was storeing it for his brother inlaw. I kept bugging him to sell it to me and at one point had the money on the table and the guy across from me and he could not sign the title. He bought it new out of high school and his heart made him balk at the last minute. The price was 800.00 bucks and the car ... ou: 1970 SS convert. Bench seat column shift round dash with dummy lights.350hp 396, it had F41 susp, all the tags and after reading up a bit I found out that the front running lamp lens on a SS were white with yellow colored bulbs. Regular chevelle has the orange lens with the white bulbs. I find alot of owners over look this and I always can tell on a drive by especially if the car is aged. You can buy the lenses repop now but they should be marked a such. Paul
