Spybot Search and Destroy, Lavesoft Adaware and Spyware Doctor are three programs you should try running. All are available from download.com. Between running the three, they should get rid of just about everything.

I work for an ISP in San Diego and install and troubleshoot customers stuff, and up til recently we provided customers with Lavasofts Ad-Aware. But due to liscensing issues we can not provide it. In my professional and personal opinion Ad-Aware is the best anti-spyware program... Hands down!!! It does require user interaction, to use and run (at least once a week, depending what garbage :Brow: your looking at).

For Trojains run Norton or McAfee antivirus and also scan perodically with Trend-micro's on line scan.

Pay for and keep your andivirus updated!!! Don't be a cheap a$$:moonu:. Pay for IT!!! AND USE IT!!!! REGULARLLY!!!! You would not believe how many people don't use it... I have customers with Norton 2002 (never used)and complain that their comp wont connect to the net... GEEE... once Im on, I run trend micro's scan and once I find a virus (read many..........viruses) Im done. Your comp is like your car, keep it clean and defraged and it will last.... Don't, and you can support Dell or Gateway every couple of years... :Dou:

Oh yeah run a firewall, I perfer Norton System works... But thats just me...

Anyway Im starting to vent, so, Im done.... :beer

I'll second Spybot Search & Destroy and Ad Aware (link given a couple posts up). When looking for Spybot, if you search, be sure to search for the whole title; "Spybot Search & Destroy." Some malware uses the word spybot to fool you, and you can have bigger problems.

For a free basic firewall you can try Kerio Personal Firewall, which is a 30-day trial. It does a lot of different things, but after the 30 days it still works as a firewall. The content filtering, ad blocking, popup blocking, etc. stops after 30 days - but the firewall part is the free part.

Next, use Mozilla Firefox, for your browser. It is much better than M$ Internet Explorer, blocks most popups, and you can add extensions to do many things, including ad blocking. It won't do everything, though, so you'll still need to use M$IE for a few pages - but try to use Firefox for everything you can.

Also, do not open emails if you do not know where they are from (and don't download attachments unless you are sure the person sent them on purpose). Don't use M$ Outlook or Outlook Express for email - they are insecure. Instead try Mozilla Thunderbird (which you can find on the same page as Firefox).

Some malware can be extremely difficult to remove. I have to remove stuff from my Aunt's machine, and will probably just do a fresh install of Windoze Crap-P, install these programs, and lock it down as much as I can. However, if she doesn't use the programs I mentioned, she will continue to have problems.

The only reason I don't install Linux on her machine instead of Windoze is because her kids like to play games that only run in Windoze. Otherwise, for word processing, email, web browsing, movies and music, Linux is as easy as anything else, and much more secure.

ad aware and spybot search and destroy are good program to have. unfortunately....some hijackers arent spyware....so they wont get picked up by the aforementioned. they are a virus and must be taken care of by an antivirus

What Truzi said - do not use IE, use Netscape or some other browser. This is the most important change you can make. I made the switch and it dropped my infections by 99%. Maybe Bill will get IE upgraded to be secure, but until then, beware.

Over a year using, no hijacks, no secret installs, no crap I don't want. Or you could spend money and give yourself a huge headache and end up spending more money for a pro to fix it by using special programs to remove crap and keep using ie.
