    Hi guys

When I bought my 455 off of an auto recycler the guy said that the car it came out of had low miles, its a 73 by the way. I bought the engine because it was super clean in and out. I'm gonna rebuild it for around 450hp w/430 heads.

Upon dissasembly of the engine I noticed that the hone job was still there. Puzzled....I was getting dissapointed cause I thought it was untouched original. So I decide to mic the crank. It came out standard/standard, this id good:)

Since the motor is mint, I was thinking of reusing the cast pistons for the rebuild "keep in mind all the bores are well within there out of round limit". And the motor will see around 5600rpm

Also, what kind of compression ratio will these pistons yeild with 67cc 430 heads.

    Thanks a bunch
    Marc

My 462 is a bored out '74 455. My experience with the cast pistons is that they can crack along the casting lines....which is why my 455 is now a 462. I would go the safe route and get some forged pistons with fly cut valve reliefs in them. But you do seem to have gotten a damn good engine:TU:

I think your right Chris. Maybe I should go forged. Just trying to save some cash, maybe in the long run forged is a good investment.

Looks like TA is gonna get a good customer cause I'm gonna order a complete rebuild kit...yes with forged pistons and a 413 cam w/roller rocker. I guess Chrismas is coming early this year.

I didn't work the numbers out yet but 462ci, is that .30 over ?

    Thanks again Chris

462 would be .30 over the stock 4.3125 if memory serves right. .60 over would be 468.

Thanks Dave I think i'll go .30 over if everything checks out. Called TA they only have .60 over forged kits I think i'll wait for the smaller pistons. Save the rest of the clearance just in case I have to rebuild things again.

    compression ratio

You cannot take this for granted, just because a piston is advertised at 10.2 to 1 means nothing. You must calculate this and deck your block accordingly. I just rebuilt my 400 (now bored to 430) and was shooting for a 9 to 1 CR (due to the horrific gas we get in California) . I purchased the High RPM Cast piston made by Badger and advertised at 10.2 to 1 (supposedly stock CR), if I had done nothing to the block or heads my actual CR would have been 8.7 to 1. Thankfully I wasn't looking for much more and only very light decking to the block and heads was required (ended up at 8.95 to 1).
Making 450hp is a completely different subject, you should check out Tri Shield Performance"s level 1 engine (rated at 450hp) to get an idea of what it takes to get there.

    Thanks Icac_man

I've already looked at a number of combo's on Jim's site. I'll be running a stock valve 430 big port head and looking for 10.1. Thanks for the info though i'll be asking questions in regard to what you have stated. Since the buick is new to me I was thinking on getting Steven Dove's book. But it's hard to find without ordering directly from the U.S

    Thanks Again:TU:

    Buickus Rex '67 GS400 4-Speed

    Cubic inches = bore x bore x stroke x # of cylinders x .785

    A .030" over 455 has a bore of 4.3425". (standard bore is 4.3125")

    So 4.3425 x 4.3425 x 3.9 x 8 x .785 = 461.853 c.i. , or 462.

    Marc,

You will want to look into joing the BPG. TA has specials for members only which include the roller rockers, cams, lifters, and many other parts you'll be using.

Go HERE to see the specials and the link for the info to join!

Oh yeah it's ".030" over (as in 30 thousandths). ".30" would be 3/10ths of an inch!!! Now that's overboring. :Brow: :eek2:
