I am trying to find out if 5500 is to much for a used motor. I did pull the #7 rod cap and the bearing looked great. Its out of a 72 Riv and I added a mild cam. I have about 500-1000 miles on it. Pretty hard miles. Great oil pressure. TIA John
rap her out... you 'll find out  How much oil pressure? WHy do you ask? putting a cam in it? shouldn't have need much rpm with a stock cam.
Adjusting shift points. Mild Crower cam. easy 60PSI oil pressure at high RPM, over 20 at idle. It likes the RPM, for now....
My motor let go at 80,000. The cap just broke. It was #5 or #7 I don't rember but I think it was #7. But it had never been opened up, I was at about 5800 when it came unglued. But I would think that as long as you've opened it up and made sure everything on the bottom end is tight and torqued proper you should be good to 5500. New cam and springs right? If it breaks I'll help you fix it. That is unless I should become employed. God Forbid!! :beer
http://www.crower.com/misc/cam_spec/cam_finder.php?part_num=52239&x=45&y=9 Mild cam. original springs. Rick, Thanks for the offer. It would be fun to have you help. The only thing is The kind of help I would really need is $$$. Plus I do not want to pollute the drag strip or oil my tires. Springs are fairly inexpensive. Kind of a PIA in the car.
I wouldn't go over 5500 unless you swap the valvesprings. I've put a set on a 455 in the car in an hour, it's safer to do it now. When they float, you're likely to bend a few pushrods and possibly tweak a valve.
So why swap springs? Because they are old or because the are OE design? I am worried about throwing a rod. Not to mention melting cam bearings. o No:
Because they are old. I think the 455 springs may have a tendency to fail after they have been around a while. I broke one on my Stage 1 when it had 66,000 miles. I later learned it had plenty of help as someone I had "loaned" my car to had given it a good workout (high rev.) The spring broke in three places, the valve keepers dropped out, the rocker slide off to the side and the pushrod was bent. The pushrod was actually hitting the valve cover. I do not know why the valve did not drop into the cylinder. I used one of those valve spring tools that uses an air chuck in the spark plug hole and changed the entire set with out ever removing the heads or engine. I have not had any problems since.
If that motors a stocker "Smogger" even with a bumpstick upgrade,I would not buzz it over 5000 grand. It sounds like you have a hi miler untouched engine there.IMO the engine is revving for nothing past 5000 grand and is really not making any more power, it`s a blow up waiting to happen!! ou: Later,Tony.
