how to i.d. a trans ?

    hows the best way to i.di. atrans it is out of a 68 riv(he says)would this be a shortshaft /400 one more what rear end would that car have 8.5 ? thanks pete

    The shortshaft 400 has an extension housing that is about 4" long, just take a look. On the passenger side of the trans is a small tag with a 2 letter code. For a 68 Riv, it should have the letters BT, and stamped into the bottom of the tag should be 68-B-T, and some other numbers. 68's usually had the 8.2 10 bolt, but I'm not sure of the Riv.

    68 Riv trans. and rear

    The 68 Riv has a 9 3/8" 12 bolt rear. The GS version came with a 3.42 posi.

    hey ken what does it measure 54/1/2/??? i want to use it in a 65 skylark i cant be that lucky can i pete

    Sorry Pete, the 68 Riv rear is too wide for your Skylark.
