I've got my engine and trans out of my 67 442. I was looking for some identification marks to determine if it is the original or not. The only evidence I could find was a little "tag" attached to the side cover with one of the bolts. What is the way to identify a 4 speed trans.
    Thanks, and Happy New Year!

There is a VIN on the passenger side that should match your car.

The stamp on the passenger side is P7M08. The tag that is fastened by a side cover bolt is "3877459". Do these mean anything to you??
    Thanks

I think the date code is December 8, 1967. If that is correct it would be too late for your car.

A muncie trans with the code letters of "P7M08" decodes as the following

    P Muncie 4-speed
7 1967 Model year, (not necessarily the year of production)
    M August
08 the 8th day of the year

There also will be no gear ratio code after this number as that didn't start until late in the 68 model year.

So if you sum everything up you end up with a Muncie 4-speed that was assembled on August 8, 1966, and if your car is an early 67 442 then this could be your original trans.

All this info and more can be found in the Date Code book I wrote.

PS. There should also be a partial vin# stamped into the trans that would identify it for your particular car.

Don't be suprised of you DO NOT FIND a VIN stamped in that box....I think they started stamping the last 8 digits of the VIN on the D side of the box in '68. Lack of VIN may be Olds specific...I don't know for sure.

    Duane,
Thank you for the information! My car is a September build so this transmission is probably date coded correctly for the car. I can't find any other stampings on the transmission. Thank you to everyone for your assistance.

Olds did start the VIN stamp on the engines and trans in 1968.Prior to that, engines were serialized on the RH cylinder head, and did not match the VIN. Protecto plates had both the engine serial number and the VIN. No attempt was made to stamp the trans at the assembly plant.

Patton is dead right as usual on the "Olds specific" comment. What happened at Lansing may or may not apply to the other car lines. That may apply to BOP divisions of GM also, but each acted pretty much independent of each other in many things, and n fact, competed against each other more than against anyone else outside. Lots of things were different between those divisions as they each had their own assembly plants at home. Other divisions were welcome to use what they had on their cars, but didn't change their own unless there was something to be gained in quality or performance, not just cost like it is today.

We have a thread going on the Olds forum on rear axle widths on the 64-67 cars. Olds for sure changed the width for the 66 model year and got wider like the 68-72's. Not sure about Chev, though. We're thinking they continued to use the 64-65 width up until 67 on the Chevelle line. Not sure about Pontiac and Buick. Lots of contraversy there, same basic logic (or lack of it) behind that.

Sorry there Harvy. I had forgotten that under the Muncie convention T was December and M was August as Duane stated. I had the book and the internet site loaded but relied on the frail memory.
