Please help.... In need of instruction on how to remove dash bezel in 72 GS. How do I get to the screws that are not visible? Thank you Tom
Tom. you need to take the dash pad off first. It is a bit of work. Do you have anyone local who knows these cars? To get the pad off. first take out the glove box liner. Get all the nuts off the bottom of the pad. I think one or two is up on the top pointing down and two or three are straight in. Look In the service or assembly manual if you have one. Take out the screws that go through the bezel up into the pad. You need to pry the pad off back in your direction. You can then get at the upper bezel screws. Get all the wiring off the bezel before you pull to hard on the bezel or things may break.
Also be very careful taking off and putting on the dash pad nuts. It is very common for the studs to break loose and just spin. Make sure there are no burs on the studs and the nuts spin back on easy.
Anyone have a picture of the underside of a dashpad? So far I found 2 nuts. They were underside, straight towards front of pad....basically side, not pointing up. Pry from which side? Closest to vents, or windshield?
There are 3 studs!! Two are just above the glove box, the other is under the top of the pad just above the glove box liner. George N had a nice tutorial on his site on removing a dash pad and instrument cluster. Its a bit involved and there are a few tricks to know.
There are 3 clips for the pad once you remove the three nuts- left corner, right corner and center. Dont forget to remove the two screws that screw the cluster to the pad Its a little violent, but pull on the pad towards you on the right corner. Once that one pops, pop the center one then the left. and dont break anything!
Got the pad off.....Yes, it did feel like a violent yank. It's a really scary rip noise even. I was afraid to look at the pad after that, but all was fine.
Yes it does require quite a yank. When you put it back make sure all the tabs on the top of the pad slide into the upper metal dash. It is easy to miss one.
Is removing the Dash Pad provide enough space to access the instrument cluster bulbs? Or does the Bezel need to be pulled forward as well? Sorry, not trying to hijack your thread...
If you are real dexterous you can reach up and pull the bulbs out without removing the dash. I have done it this way many times. You will scratch your arms and hands however. If it is an AC car the lower vent needs to come out.
I did try this last year sometime, but I couldn't manage to get at them. Maybe I was trying the wrong approach, or perhaps I'm just not "dexterous" enough. A distinct possibility. Thanks,
Dave, Give it another try. Do one at a time. They just twist out. There are different bulb types so that is why you do one at a time.
I'll give it another shot. If it ever gets warm enough to pull the car out of the garage again. I don't have enough space to swing the doors wide open. ou:
Does anyone have a picture of the dash without the bezel installed? The lower left side of my opening seems to be bent. I'm not sure if it should be like this or not. It is where one of the lower screws holds the bezel to the dash. Thank you. Tom
Hi Tom, Here is a picture from my '70 convertible, maybe it helps. Please note that the radio brackets is out of position in this picture.
