How would this 455 be on the street?

    Hi All,
I just found a 70 455, bored +30, has 70 heads with Stage 1 valves and a GS116 cam. Is this a reasonable set up for the street? I'm not into racing so that's not an issue. The guy that is selling it said his Skylark went into the 11's with this combo. Is that possible? From reading some other threads on cams it would appear that running 11's with this setup would not be possible. As I said, this will only be on the street anyway so it's not a real issue how fast it will go. I'm getting the engine complete with TH400 for $350. so I don't think I can pass it up.
    Thanks for your help.

I doubt that it went into the 11s. It sure sounds like an un-modified 455. The reason I say that is the price he sold it for. I believe the gs116 is one of Postons small street cams and should be not much different than driving a bone stock 455.

At that price it would be hard to pass up unless it went "into the 11's with this combo" right before tossing a rod through a window in the block.

The key to 11's seems to be more in the heads than in the cam, although a good combination of both is best.

eneything is possible, its in how you set up the car. that is a mild cam but it would still pulls hard to 5500,that cam has 214 intake duration, the stage one cam had 204 and it will make 420 h/p with headers. so if everthing else on the moter is stock and in good tune you might have a 400 h/p moter?? port those heads if you can before you drop it in thats the key to power.

    Harvey,
That is a mild cam, and unless those heads are well ported(which I doubt considering purchase price), I don't think he went 11's unless his Skylark weighs 3000 lbs, with him in it:laugh: and he had a great chassis with perfect traction.:pp

A couple of us on the board have had this cam in their engines, dyno results have shown that it nose dives past 4500rpm, which is a good 1000 rpm below where the real high hp numbers can be made with these engines. I think all of us were running this cam "straight up" which is a mistake, and I no I have zero head porting done, that said I picked up over 40hp just switching to a TA290-94 and installing it 4 degrees advanced. I've not heard of one person making over 400 (documented) hp or running under 13sec with that cam. I does however offer a smooth as silk idle and torque right off idle.

    Hi Guys,
This sounds like it will be a good combo for the street. I'm buying the engine and trans! Everything is there and in good condition. It's currently dismantled so it will get a rebuild before going in my car. Thanks for all of your help. :TU:

If its already 030 over you won't be able to bore it out much more. 038-040 is max without getting into overheating problems. But it sounds like a decent price, worst case scenerio is you have a bunch of usable parts (crank, heads, rods, manifolds) and just have to find a fresh block to put them in.

May not be worn to the point where you have to bore it anymore at all. Maybe he turned 11's in the 1/8 mile!

never foget!! jan 1970 moter trend road test 13.38 at 105.5, that was a stage one automatic with 3.64 gears. the 4 speed went 13.79. wasnt that why the stage one was considered the 3rd fastest production 4 seater for so long?

That's the exact cam I'm running now but no Stage valves and it is out of its power band past 4300 rpms. I've run 13.51 at just under 100 MPH in a 4000# Skylark, the engine idles smooth and it's a great street motor. I'd buy it if I were you even if it is worn out!

Kelly....I believe you are refering to the original "50 Fastest List" that listed the '70 Stage 1 as #3 overall. That made it the fastest 4-seater only surpassed by the (1) 427 Shelby AC Cobra and the (2) L-88 427 Corvette...both 2-seaters!:TU:

The list has since been updated with modern cars added. Models such as the Viper and a few others have moved many cars down the list including the '70 Stage 1. Thing to remember is that the lists have been compiled using many various magazine testing articles and that "our" cars were tested with bias-ply "skinnies" compared to modern "fatty" radials...big difference.
