I'm not sure if this should be posted here, but its my first time on this website. I've been looking for a 1970 GS Stage 1 for a long time, so if anybody know of any for sale that would be great. I am talking to a guy who has one, but hes not sure if it is numbers matching and that is what I'm looking for. I would like to know where the numbers are on the block and transmission so he could look for them for me. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks alot.

    Well,
If it's a 70 GS455 hardtop, the vin should start with 446370. This tells you that it's a legit 70 GS455, and not a skylark cloned to be a GS. The 7th character in the vin should be an H indicating it was built in Flint, MI. Most if not all of the Stage1's were built there. Between the #5, and #7 plugs, stamped into the deck, should be the letters SS. Between the #1, and #3 plugs should be the last 6 digits of the vin, also stamped into the deck. This part of the deck is visible because the heads do not cover the deck completely. It's usually dirty so some cleaning is required, along with good lighting. Note, if the engine has been rebuilt, and the deck has been surfaced to true it up, none of these numbers will be visible. The engine valvecovers should be chromed. On the transmission, passenger side, there should be a tag that reads 70 BB. This is the Stage1 THM 400 trans. On the drivers side, above the pan gasket, the vin should be stamped into the case. The distributor should be # 1112016, and the carb should be 7040246. The axle code (stamped into the passenger side axle tube) should be OO(3.42), or ON (3.64), and it should be the 10 bolt. If it's a 12 bolt, someone put it there. That should do for starters.

    I think I'll add....

All known 70 stage 1 cars were built in Flint, not true for 71 & 72. :TU:

This site is an excellent place to start looking for the car. :bglasses:

C'mon Lawrence. We need a LITTLE more info than that if we're to ever learn ANYTHING! :pp

Very nice job of detailing it for us cuz. Very thorough indeed!

    That's pretty much all anybody'd need to confirm a 455 Stage1 car for 1970.

Hey thanks for all the responses I appreciate it very much. I am on the east coast in PA. My father had a 70 GS 350 he bought new but he flipped it. His cousin had a 70 GS Stage 1 all redone, frame off restoration. He was going to sell it to my dad for about 10,000 dollars four year ago, but the place he had the car stored burned down, and the car was burnt to a crisp. I've been looking for a Stage 1 Car ever since then. I would like one that has a numbers matching engine and transmission, and I'd like verification if possible. I thought there was another place on the front of the engine that had the vin code on it, but I guess not. Anyway thanks for letting me aboard and if any of you ever find a stage one email me at Krayzie949@aol.com Any condition is considered. Thanks alot everyone.
