....she called needing a ride to pick up her car after having it repaired, I was off yesterday and it was BEAUTIFUL, so I dropped the top and headed over to pick her up. We walk out from her house, and she see's the Convertible top is down and says "Are we going in That ??!!?? Heck yeah....!!! I tell her, she says give me a minute and returns in short order wearing a jacket and a Lil Ole Lady hair-holder (Whatever they're called.....like a bandana). Well.....she is a Lil' Ole Lady being 63 years.....but still young at heart ....as she proved by asking if she could drive :eek2: o No: Well.....OK She gets in and starts it up and putters around the side streets at Lil Ole Lady speeds and pulls over the block before the main road saying "You drive the rest of the way.....I just wanted to see If you'd let me :Brow: " So.....we do the Chinese fire drill and switch seats and when Im getting situated she asks "Soo.....How many Horses does this have, anyway ??? ....and How fast is it...Really" I ask..."Do you wanna see ??? or do you want me to tell you...??" "Lets see !!!! Like you do at the racetrack !!!" OK.....o No: "Put your head back against the headrest Ready.....(waiting for opening in traffic) ========= VROOOOOM !!!! I nailed it pretty good but had to pedal it through first due to spinning, but stayed in it pretty much to the end of 2nd, ~ 70 mph then braked kinda hard. "WOWOWOW !!!!! Yaaa Hoooo !!!!! When we move to Florida, can you build me a convertible JUST LIKE THIS ONE ??? ou: ou: Well....I should have expected as much - when I was 18yrs old and had just bought a Motorcycle, HER MOTHER (78 at the time) INSISTED I take her for a ride......and I still have that picture in my garage - Me with Long curly hair with GrandMa hanging on to the back of my bike Sometimes Mom's can be :bglasses:
good for your mom Alan, Aren't mom's the best.. So when are you going to start building her a drop top?:Brow: I took The Wagon over to my mom & dad's when I got, it they both said they loved it & I better have bail money in my purse at all timesou: Take care, Beth
Hey Alan way cool:TU: ,my mom loves my old cars too, lets see a shot of you on the bike,i love old pics. Thanks:beer
I wish my parents were that cool. BOth are telling me to slow down, even my dad, who was a streetracer in teh 60's!
Dana - thats just too cool that you actually wanted the Sporty as your ride. My wife glares at my sporty.....but I did talk her into driving a Roadmaster Wagon for now as her daily ride Steve - that pic is a hoot !! did she take it for a pass ?? George.....you just want to see me with long hair, you freak the bike was a '72 honda CB500-4 with a Vetter WindJammer fairing and kerker 4>1 exhaust and a custome touring seat.....paid all of $600 for it in '78. Looked very similar to the bike prince rode in purple rain Wierd thing - I just passed one parked on the street in Manhatten last friday !! I haven't seen one in YEARS Id post it, but its framed and I dont have a scanner.
Thats cool. Reminds me of my Dad after he had his stroke and spent 6 months in the hospital, wehn he finally got home is was late summer and I took him for a ride in my then new 97 ram air formula six speed....we tooled around like I always do when giving older folks rides. We were at a red light, he looks over at me with that grin on his face, "well, its pretty but does it have any balls??" I left him in no doubt it did!!!! That was fun. left 150 foot tracks....He really enjoyed that, most fun he had had in a long time. later tim
My mom loves drivin the Skylark. She says it makes her feel young again. Shes not that old (41 today). But she gets a little throttle happy every now and then.
Alan, That is HER car! She raced it at Norwalk Buick race day the last 2 years. 1st year it was running high 10's with a 350. 2nd year it had a big block, but there were suspension problems that needed to be worked out (front tires looked like basketballs being dribbled down the 1/8 mile :eek2: ). The 350 is going back in it now. They are planning on low 10's with it. My dad overheard someone at our local track (quaker city) say something to the effect of "she's got a lot more guts than me". We agree. Neither of us will drive that thing! She considers his low 12 GS to be slow and :boring: !
Steve, Can you give me some details on that T-bucket? Did you build it? What rear end etc? It looks neat and I have a spare 350 and trans lying around..... Thanks , Adam.
Uh oh, you're dating yourself with that knowledge Phil - unfortunately I knew what it was too............. Took my kids out last night for thier first ride in the back of my 70 Stage 1 Hdtp and lit em up hard. They all were screaming with delite That's some quality family time!! Steve
Adam C, She bought the T from another Buick guy locally. He is the one who built it. My dad has done a few things to it since they bought it. He did the candy pink paint for her (the pictures never do it justice- when you catch it in the light it changes from red to pink to purple- pretty neat). It will have a new 350 next season. The rear end is solid mounted to the frame (not the way to go if you want to go faster than 11's). It's a Ford 9". I think it has low-mid 4. gears. Everything else is pretty much as you see. It has a fiberglass bucket with roll cage (it's built for one small person- I'm 6'4" -240# and I can squeeze in it, but I couldn't steer it). With a stock Buick (of course) 350 with a cam, it was running low 11's. My dad recently upgraded the front suspension to coil-overs, and got rid of the monoleaf. I think they might be converting the rear to a ladder bar setup soon. It tends to bounce at the top end of the track. It's a pretty light car- probably under 2000 with driver. A scary ride for sure. My mom loves it, but she wants to go faster. If you see her at the track, avoid racing her. She's really good on the lights!
Hot rod did the 10 cheapest project cars or something like that and named a company that you can get T-buckets from. They'll supply everything but the rearend and the engine. You might want to try that. I think they said that one "fully loaded" with everything but drivetrain was 9 thou or something like that.
Dad's are cool, too! About 15 years ago (my Dad was 59 at the time), my Mom went on a mission trip to the Middle East for a month. She was the pianist for a choir that was traveling all over Israel. Anyway, my Dad, knowing that Mom would be gone for a month, took a month's vacation at the same time, and called me up to ask if he could "borrow" my drop top GS while she was gone! Told me he just wanted to "cruise around the lakes".....Ya, right!:Brow: Of course, I let him use it for the duration. Funny how I had to get new tires after that summer........uzzled:
I thought this would be a good one to bring back.... When I was 17 after I just put the 455 in the Apollo, my mom's car wouldn't start and she had to borrow the Apollo to go to work in. The next day she told me she was pulling out of the lot and someone came up fast so she had to hit the gas....It got broadside and started burning the tires so bad she said it scared her. :3gears: That was the last time she ever was in the car. I keep telling her I'll take her for a ride, but she won't even get in.
