I recently purchase a 1970 Stage1 auto, with the hopes of taking it pure stock racing. It will be a long learning curve for me. All I really know is when the light turns green ....you go. After going to Martin last year I knew that I wanted to try. Wanted to race since I was a young man ....you guys know the story. I thought I'm not getting younger. The car has time slips that state it ran 13:70 @ 97 mph. Not real quick I know, But a good starting point. Right now I don't know granola from shineola but looking forward to the challenges and learning. Any info or help will be gladly accepted an digested. I live in Michigan near Flint. Thanks to all in advance. Jim
Welcome aboard! Looking at the ET and MPH, I would say that your 60' times need some work. I would advise you to first remove the roller skates from under your tires pictured in your avatar!:Brow: :Brow: Seriously, are you looking for advice for what to do at the starting line?? Burnout box?? Anything specific?? :Comp:
Funny Frank!. That's not the car I plan to race. That's a four speed car, and I'm no Jimmy Johnson. The car I want to race is the one I'm purchasing now. It is picture in my post. " it must be a sickness...another Stage1 inbound". It is an automatic. Any and all info, tips etc, wanted. I believe it still has the air gears 3:42's so that will most likely be one of the first changes. I've never done a burnout, can you run a line lock? the car has power disc brakes http://i180.photobucket.com/albums/x215/jj455/CHEVY002.jpg here's a copy of the time slip.
Welcome, its great to have another ps'er join the fold, even if you drive the wrong make, first of all see the R on your gear shift, put it there that means Race, then punch it.
your ET's are'nt bad,60 ft's are good, but 97mph-not good, the cars not pulling clear down the track looks like to me,i'd look into some carb tuning.
Nebraska and Mopar.....sorry to read that. Don't do anything drastic...Dr Phil can help you to find a new pair! I believe that time was on street tires, with the 3:42 gears and the air on at recirculate. Really don't know. It was the time slip mailed to me in the bundle of info. I won't be taking delivery for about another week. I'm already feeling the love! Jimbo
OUCH,i think you'll fit in just fine, come race with us in stanton, after fri's test N tune.you'll be an old pro,the thing that takes practice is the parking lot octoberfest-beer,food,jokes,beer,beer,beer.post some pics when you get it.
http://i180.photobucket.com/albums/x215/jj455/gm001.jpg Here it is. Plan on be at the June 22nd meet, and at Stanton. It will be driven to both events, raced and driven back home if all goes as planned. Thanks Guys see you there....Jimbo
Welcome Jim! Very neat looking car you have there. Do you know what the exhaust system consists of? You need a good mandrel bent 2 1/2" system to let a 455 breathe.:TU:
Jim, I can help you with the burnout I do not know anything about pure stock but for race experience the Royal Pontiac Club http://clubs.hemmings.com/frameset.cfm?club=royalpont has a nice series that will give you lots of practice for a good price. Need more info give me a call. I'm in Linden and get up to Flushing quit a bit. 629 4050
Glad to have you aboard! Leave the rear end alone. Torque motors like Olds and Buick do their dirty work down low. I would follow what Tom said and look at the exhaust and also run a compression check of the motor. Carb work is most likely in order but the fuel pump may be needing replaced. That time slip is nothing to sneeze at, but you and I both know that it can do better. Welcome to the club. :moonu:
Or just skip all that, and add a lumpy cam and it'll run 13.26 all day long, huh Rusty:bla: :bla:Maybe he should TnT in St Louis,by the way jj455 how old are ya?
Kudos to the Royal Pontiac performance club for allowing other brands in and treating them the same as anyone else. Check out the 2007 King of the Hill winner there. None other than Rob Thomas in his gorgeous (and very fast) 69 442. For those of you who didn't know, Rob drove my car in the first 3 years we were in Pure Stock. His reactions and consistency are unbelievable. The car is a street car with a 9:1 Olds 455 with a T400 and a 4.10 rear end. Nothing special or trick. But runs in the mid 11's now and is right on the money all the time. Good guys. :bglasses:
Come out and play, JJ. Don't count yourself out. Old age and treachery sometimes pay off in racing. You'd be suirprised how quickly it comes back to you. With these tires, it's pretty close to street racing (OH, NO! Hide the women and children!), and most of us have a lot more experience with that than some of the younger, quicker thinking people. Especially with 4 speeds. Same traction issues and there's more than one way to launch one of these cars than no-spin. 4 speed cars cars are definitely at a handicap for many reasons, but to me still a lot more fun to drive. Watch Ted Harbit drive those Supercharged 4 speed Larks. Not time to retire yet! You'd be surprised how many people there are over 50.
Oh yeah, like we need some old guys, DUDE. I think I got your '60 foot problem solved, try it when there's no SNOW!!ou:
welcome aboard. surprised no one has mentioned this before, but if you wait until green before going, you've waited too long. you want to leave on the last yellow, which is basically WHEN the light is TURNING green.
Heck....I wanna know how to get the large mph. The time slip from my car is 13:70@ 97 mph.....I see some around the same time with big mph. Is that in carb tuning? Timing? turning off the air? rolling up the windows?....o No: Like I said I'm really new to this.
