Before I switched to a complete MSD set-up including a billet dist., I had been wrestling with a Hayes Stinger S-4 system which was giving me fits. Sometimes ran good, but mostly broke up when accelerating.
I attempted to follow Jim Wiese's advice and trigger a MSD 6AL box with the Stinger converted Buick dist., but couldn't get that to even run...:Dou:
Anyway, can anybody tell me how to check a Hayes Stinger S-4 set-up or more specificly the trigger system inside the dist. I think that Hayes used Chrysler parts for their triggering set-up, but figured I'd ask and see if someone was more familiar with diagnosing them. Thanks

    Al Larry used one.

    Al,
When you trigger the MSD box with the Stinger distributor, it's really important to get the polarity right. If it's wrong the timing will be very advanced, it might not start. Try reversing the leads.

    Al,
As far as checking the magnetic pick up, I think if you put a voltmeter across the leads, and rotate the shaft, you should see some reading. I would check with the ignitionman for a definite answer.

Thanks Larry, I understood JW to say the same thing about polarity so I double and even triple checked the wiring. I even tried it reversed to see if it helped, but nope, just bucked like it was way out of time. Before anybody says it, yes I do know how to dead time the engine...:Dou:
At the time, I figured the pick-up inside the dist. must be bad, but I'd really like to see for myself.

    Al-

The following is from an Ignitionman email to me when I was doing some troubleshooting on one of his conversions:

"To test pickup, remove the two wires from the module that come
through the dist body and connect test light or voltmeter between both wires removed, spin dist (you can do this with the dist out of the engine, easier to do out of engine). Light works/shows .50 to 1.60 volts, pickup OK"

I have Larry's stinger here and I just checked it out. Setting my "El Cheapo" meter to 10 Volts DC and spinning the distributor rapidly by hand I get nothing. Doing the same thing except set to 10 Volts AC, I get between .5 and 1 volt.

    Hope this helps.

Thanks Ken, I'll have to give that a try...:TU:

Hey Guys, I finally dug out my old Stinger distributor and tested it like Ignition Man said. I get between .5 and 1.3 volts AC while spinning the shaft, so I'm going to assume the darn thing is good. Thanks guys.
Now anyone remember which way to wire it to an MSD 6AL box?
I'm gonna give it another try.

    Al,
From a Charlie Evans post on the GSCA BB: You need to order an MSD 2 pin connector, part # 8824(available from Jegs or Sumitt) MSD wires are violet(+), and green(-). The Stinger should have a black wire with a green paint mark(green paint mark on white stinger connector). This is + in polarity. Orange or yellow wire from Stinger pickup is - in polarity. So it is MSD violet to Stinger black/green, and MSD green to Stinger orange or yellow. If you wire it reversed the car may not start or if it does, it will be very advanced. Hope that helps.
