Ignition Timing

I've been working on my GS for a few days now, trying to flush out the cooling system with water. It's almost clear now, probably enough to put anti-freeze back in. My problem is that while I was running it to flush it out, I've been making some adjustments to the timing. It had a problem of dieing if I hit the gas real hard from an idle. The timing was right on TDC, and I was told to advance it a bit and try. I adjusted it to @10 degrees before TDC, and it helped. However, it didn't solve the problem. I still haven't run any type of carb cleaner in as was also suggested, I wanted to take it out for a drive to do that. Is there anything else to check? The vacuum advance is hooked to the carb base. It doesn't do anything at idle speed, no advancement at all. It does if you rev it up a bit, but I don't know how much. All I have to go by is the timing tab. The car did idle smoother when I advanced it. I was just wondering if I need to advance it more or not.
    Thanks,
    Dan

You can get a good idea what your total timing is if you use your light and watch the advance while increasing the rpms. It should end up between 12 and 1 o'clock looking at it from the front of the engine. That is just a rough estimate for around 34 to 36 degrees. Another thing you might check is the power valve in the carb. That will also give you similar problems.

Is you accelerator pump squirting any fuel when you pop the throttle?
