I have kind of the same problem as the other guy but the opposite, the car starts fine but it won't shut off! Turn off the key and it keeps running, disconnect the battery, still running,i have to pop the clutch to get it to stall out,any suggestions?

    Ignition switch?

It's located on top of the steering column. It seems to me that your "off" circuit isn't stopping electrical flow. I've never seen a car that did this, but I just looked at my 1970 Chassis manual and it didn't have any mention of troubleshooting for the car not shutting off.

Will accessories such as your radio still work when the key is turned to "off", after it's been running? The radio shouldn't work with the ignition switch off, so if it will work after the car's been running, and you turn the key to 'off', I'd suspect the ignition switch.

Did you recently install MSD or HEI or a internal-regulator alternator?

Actually i just got the car a couple of weeks ago,and it just started doing this. I first thought it was the ignition switch but before i buy one i thought i'd check first with you guys. It's a 68 so the switch is in the dash and it doesn't look like it's that tough to get to. I wonder if this has anything to do with the battery going dead?

    Mike,

If you end up needing a new ignition switch, check out this link:

    http://www.lvsales.com/oldautos.htm

When I bought my 68 special, it had a boat ignition switch in it :eek2: :eek2: :eek2: and, not surprisingly, it died a only couple of weeks after i starting driving the car daily. After calling every buick dealership within driving distance, every retail auto parts store, and all the ones that supply the repair shops--not to mention ebay--I had almost given up finding a real buick ignition switch. :stmad:

Then in a last ditch effort i typed in "buick ignition switch" in google. Several thousand clicks later i stumbled on this site. A little pricey perhaps at $17 plus shipping, but the switch was NOS and works perfectly, haven't had a lick of trouble from it. :beer

Thanks for the link Scott, i'll probally have to give them a call. I was really surprised when even year-one didn't list it for a 68
