I'm gonna have to speed this one up

I've been having a thread about an axle swap. I'm in the middle of it, but I've run in to some problems. One of the shafts is stuck. It comes out about an inch, then it gets stuck in the differential house on a broken bearing. I've been talking to Greg (wildcat 1562), and he says keep working it, sooner or later it will come out. He's now on orientation with his son, so I can't get any more help from there for the moment. Anyone who has any ideas on how to force it out? There is a thread in the got gears section (need advice), but I thought more people might look here on "the bench". I'm also trying to figure out how to disengage the drive shaft for the differential. I've taken off the four bolts, and I can't find anything else that connects the pieces; still it just sits there. There is a small bolt coming from the other side with a metal piece connected to it, I'm not sure what it's for so I'll ask here. My no. is 1 323 547 1901 if anyone has any ideas, I'll be out in the yard with the cell for a while trying to sort this one out.

    Ok, drive shaft is out.

The four bolts that hold the bearings in place in the differential house; if I would remove them, could I then try to angle the gear package so that the broken bearing might fall into a better angle, so the shaft could slide out? I have a replacement axle, so I'm too worried about what happens to this one. The reason I'm taking the shafts out, is so I can use the complete brakes for the replacement axle, which have non.

What's stopping you from taking/sliding the other axle out a little, taking off the caps holding the differential and taking it out that way?

Just thinking, ignore me if that's not possible.

Ok, one of the rollers in the bearing has flipped to it's side and has another one parallell to it inside of it. This is most likely what is blocking the shaft once the grooved end comes out to it. I'm seriously considering drilling it out, throught the side of the bearing, is it super tough steele? Any other suggestions? I took the gear holders of, but I'm not able to just lift the whole package out, since the shaft is too far in...

    ZZzz..

    Is the other axle out

If so the carrier will not lift out. You will need to pry it out with a quick pop from a long pry bar. I would try to pop the other side loose first.

Take the brake drum, turn it around, put it on the axle, spin on a couple lug nuts a few turns, grab the drum, and slide it out fast , like a slap hammer. keep doing it, and that axle will come out. make sure you have removed the retainers first. (either the "c" clips on later models, or bolt in axles, on the early units)

    New deal tomorrow......

  9. kimson, you need to get that axle out first before you can drop the carrier from the housing.
do the drum thing but DO NOT POUND ON THE DRUM. just use it like a slid hammer and keep working it out.
from the bearing being bad in the carrier it looks like shavings are on the splines.
just time consuming, keep working it.
    it will come.

How about a hammer and a centerpunch to smack the bearing that rolled the other way?

    brute force

Go to autozone and borrow the big slide hammer.

What is the deal with your main cap bolts???? They look like some sort of grade??? blue anodized mystery bolt...

It looks like he put blue dots on a layer above the bolts in the photo, in photoshop, then made them semi-transparent.

It's a pretty tight fit, once the shaft gets stuck. I got the bearing that was sitting sideways in place, but the one that must have been on the inside is nowhere to be seen. It is probably jammed behind the others or something, right now it looks like a ball bearing with one of the bearings missing. I'm not sure if I get enough force with the drum as a hammer. The idea of borrowing a big slide hammer from Autozone sounds good. I was also thinking of getting a long metal rod or pipe; sliding it in from the other empty shaft hole to the back of the stuck shaft, and the giving it a whack with asledgehammer. It should create alot of force on it. I'm on my way out there again....

Many thanks for the help, feels better to ask around than just standing there scratching your head

Here's a bonus picture, the car is 1.500$ I have the phone number if anyone is interested. It's located close to Grand Canyon.

I've got a 40 inch pipe which fits right in there, and a big sledgehammer. I've hit it over 100 times and it's movead about 1/8 of an inch. I will piss on that bearing once I get it out....

Yes, that's where we are at right no. If it won't come to you, go to it.... I'm taking a little breather here, and I've requested my girlfriend who's on her way home from work, to stop by Home Depot and get me a better saw. The shaft is going in two pieces, and the brake will be mine, MINE mmmooaaaaahhhaa

  18. all that for an axle.

Pheeew, 70% done.... I've never sawed in anything so though before, and there's lots of it... Just up for a coke, now back to the grind again.

I guess the time between my posts indicate there's been two hours of constant sawing + the time before the new saw came, probably 1 hour.

Ah, what does it matter; at least I get to learn something...
