Enlighten me, where can I find the infamous plastic insert that goes inside the vent line(s) from the gas tank. I checked my lines and did not find that peice. Thanks.

Len are you talking about this vent?

I think this is only for the 68-70 Buicks. You have a different venting system in your 71

I don't think so. I think TimR had commented a while back about a peice that fit inside the rubber hose. I could be wrong; these issues seem to blur together for me.

Jason, Ya!... where do you get that vent?
I need a new one of those!
    Shall I try GM?
I do have an old GM parts book.

I replaced all the rear rubber and metal fuel and vent lines at the tank of my 71 and there was no plastic piece.

As stated previously, plastic vent tube/riser is for 68-70 models only.

    Thanks guys.

One more thing, there is no "tar paper" barrier between the tank and the trunk floor for the 71's correct? Would adding strips between the straps and tank eliminate the possibility of noise? What about a bead of silicone between the straps and tank?

    Thanks.

    Len,
I am fairly certain all 70-2 models had the anti-squeak mat. Don't ever recall dismantling a car and not finding one. Don't know if that item is made as repro. I use 30 lb roofing felt/tar paper and it works great.

Great, I'll do that. What do you think about doing the same between the straps and tank?

Len, I don't think you need the strips between the straps as it will not look right. I installed my tank and just smeared some clear silicone on the bare tank in this area and it makes no noise.

That's what I was planning to do also. I noticed that they sell those strips for the straps; that's why I was wondering if it was correct.

    Thanks.

Once you snug the strap screws, you won't have a problem. I "think" the strap pieces you saw are for Pontiacs. I have disassembled many Skylark and Cutlass models and never found pieces under the gas tank straps.

The plastic orifice tubes on 71 and 72 cars are inside the rubber hose that connects to the emissions line that runs up to the charcoal cannister. Original hoses had a yellow mark on the outside to show the location.

I haven't seen a mat yet above the tank on any of my 71 or 72 cars either (going on 8 cars now, all flint and fremont).

OK, got an e-mail or two about this so here is a picture. Original hose (look about an inch in from the end. See the bulge?, that is the plastic piece inside the hose)...note the yellow stripe....and also one of the plastic orifice parts once removed from a hose.

If you still don't believe, suit yourself! :puzzled:

Tim, where exactly in the wide wide world of sports did you find that *@#! thing! Is it near the tank or along the frame?

It connects the evap pipe (that goes to the cannister up in the engine bay) to the vapour separator under rear seat.

Three vent lines go from fuel tank to the vapour sep, fourth line goes goes from vapour sep to the evap line. It is inside this fourth line.

George, I recently removed my tank from my Fremont built 72 Skylark. I pulled the buildsheet from the top of the tank and there was no anti squeak mat. Maybe they ran out of anti squeak mats at the Fremont plant. Just FYI
