Can anyone give me some advice on steps to replacing my stock distributor with my new MSD version? I've never replaced a distributor before and don't even know where to start. Also, should I expect to see a improvement in the 1/4 mile from going to this new iginition?
Installation is the same as any stock distributor, follow the instructions fpr wiring very carefully as they are not the same as stock. One thing you will notice is your gas mileage will go down because its an all mechanical advance distributor. YOu can PM me if you need more advice. Ive been running the MSD setup for 6 years now.
Dan, The simple way is the note on your present distributor cap, where the #1 wire connects. Mark this spot on the distributor body with some paint or tape. Then remove the cap, and crank the motor, until the firing end of the rotor lines up with your mark. Then remove the distributor hold down bolt and bracket. You can now pull the distributor straight out of the motor. As you do, you'll notice that the rotor will turn as you pull the distributor out.(this is due to the helical nature of the gear). Install your MSD distributor, making sure the rotor faces the #1 wire on your MSD cap. You will have to start with the rotor facing away from the correct position, so that as you push the distributor home, the rotor turns and ends up facing correctly. This may take a few tries. Also note that the bottom of the distributor drives the oil pump shaft. You may need to position the oil pump shaft a bit so that the distributor mates correctly with it. When everything is correct, the distributor will drop all the way in and the rotor will be correctly positioned. Good luck.
