What is strait up on a BBB??? I broke the timing chain, and have no reference for installing the new one. I know, Ford guys have no business working on buicks :moonu: . And the timing gear should be installed with at least grade 8 hardware... I pulled grade 5 out  . It kind of makes me wonder whats in deeper.

Thanks for the help in advance...

Both marks together on the gears. Cylinder #1 (front driver side) on TDC. Distributer in, pointing to #1(turn oil pump gear with screwdriver so shaft engages). On driver side you have cylinders
    1,3,5 & 7 on passenger side 2,4,6 & 8. Firing order is 1,2,7,5,6,3,
4 & 8. The distributer turns counter clockwise.

Make sure you pack the oil pump full of vasoline or you won't get prime at start up.

Firing order is 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2 on a BBB, and the distributor turns clockwise.:Dou:

Larry is correct. My last two sentences were backwards. It's that drug in the turkey.

Visit the TA Performance web site. They have a pretty good explanation on how to install a timing gear. The main thing is to line up the two dimples on the gear sprockets. It is not that different from working on a Ford. When you install the gears and chain with the dimples facing each other you will be at TDC. If you removed the oil filter make sure that you pack the pump completely full of petroleum jelly. After you put the timing cover back on and have oil in the sump, prime the pump by spinning the oil pump with a suitable primer (I use an old screwdriver shaft with an electric drill in the pump shaft). It turns clockwise. Then line the distributor up to where it is pointing to #1 plug. Replace all of the hardware with new stuff if you can. Insurance policy! This will get you in the ball park to set your timing. You will find that it is pretty straight foward and simple after you have done it.

Set your timing, adjust your carb., and drive.

Thanks for the info, Ill be getting everything back together when my stuff come back from tri-shield. Having Jim do his polish job to the timing cover and intake. Too bad the rest of the engine looks like crap...
