Need some help. I recently replaced my valley pan gasket on my 65 riv 425. Well I put everything back together with new gaskets and now a car that was running fine runs like hell. It was suggested to me that the gaskets may be on backwards they seemed to line up perfectly and I placed them with the dimpled side towards the intake flat side on the head. The felpro box only had a piece of paper that said don't put them on wrong or they will leak. Also should I put anything on the gaskets before laying them down???? Please help.

    Thanks:Do No:

If those were installed improperly it would run like crap and would probably not idle.

This is hard to explain, but I think the ears in all 4 corners get installed with the flats facing each other.....you can see this without taking the manifold off the engine.:bglasses:

The only sealer I would use is the spray "copperhead", but it's not necessary.

It deffinitley doesn't want to idle. So the sharp corners of the gasket should be towards the center. If you reached your hand under the intake they would cut you.

Thanks that is how I have mine. I did put some stuff on there called Hylomar maybe that stuff didn't work. Somebody suggested some RTV a real thin coat then let it set up. I have not tried nor heard of the copperhead stuff how does it work?

Don't use silicone! if it sets up thick you can warp or crack the manifold. And you will never get it to come off. I never heard of hylomar, but you really don't need any sealer on these.

If your car won't idle, perhaps something else is wrong. Check the PCV hose, make sure you don't have a chunk of old gasket or something in the venturi of the carb (I did that once and it drove me nuts:grin: ) it sounds like you may have a vacuum leak somewhere.

Also, check the firing order. It should be 12784563, 1 is right , 1357 and left front is 2, 2468 going to the rear. Dist. rotation is clockwise.

    Hope that helps you!:Do No:

The only way to be sure is to remove the intake, get 2 new gaskets, make sure they are installed the correct way, and see what happens.

Don't use that hylamar stuff, get a can of copper spray head gasket sealer and use that if you prefer to use sealer. Also, it would be a good idea to make sure you didn't warp anything, and torque the bolts to 25-35 ft.lbs.:Smarty:

Thanks for the help I have just removed the intake and cleaned up the surfaces I cleaned them really good this time. Already called the parts store and am going to run some errands and pick up the new gaskets. I am going to run a straight edge over the surfaces and I am going to try installing them with no sealer. I will let you know how it goes.

    NJBuickRacer I'd rather be racing...

If you still have a leak, try spraying carb cleaner sparingly around the area of the suspected leak. If the RPMs pick up, you found your leak. Make sure you stay away from the carb, as if the carb cleaner gets sucked in with the air it will raise your RPMs as well. Good luck....

Well guys I found the problem. After replacing the intake gaskets twice....checking all possible leaks.....re-checking timing. We discovered the problem. I noticed alot of fuel be pumped in the carb at idle. The carb is a brand new reman unit from edelbrock. I put my old carb back on the Carter that I rebuilt and it ran like a champ with no adjustment. Needless to say I am going to contact edelbrock to see what they can do for me. Thanks for all the help.

See what happens when you don't tell the 'whole story'?
Sorry, couldn't help myself with the unfunny humor...
Glad you found the problem area...
