I need some one to answer a question for me. Is it normal to have carbon deposit build up on the part of the intake valve thats up inside of the head. I took my intake off and looked down inside the head and it looks like what the exhaust valves would look like. Also the intake manifold runners are some what black. I can't see as to how this is normal. If it's not, what's wrong and how do I fix it.

    Thanks Rick:Do No:

    I had that too

I had that both on my 430 heads and on my 455 heads. I just cleaned them of with a wire brush. When I did my garage porting!

Typically, those deposits are caused by excessive oil going past the valve guides.

I have never seen an iron head, that did not need guides..

The other possibility is that your sucking oil thru the PCV system, or thru the intake/head flange.

With an oily intake, I might look at the PCV setup first.. see if there is oil in the hose from the carb to the valve.
