For the past 2 years, I'v not had a home phone as I'v had no real need for one. Used my cell for everything. My net connection has been from a neighbor who has DSL. When he installed the DSL line, I paid for the wireless hardware to connect to his computer, and as such, have had [basically] free net access since that time :Brow:

Unfortunately, my neighbor is moving next month so it looks like I'll have to start paying "the man" to surf at home :(

I ABSOLUTELY :af: HATE :af: the local cable company, so cable modem is NOT an option for me.

I'm starting from scratch on this one. I'll need a phone line, and a DSL provider, and I'm looking for the best deal. As stated earlier, I dont feel the need for a home phone, but I'm guessing it's required for DSL :Do No:

    Help me out guys

Sat requires a phone line to send out-going signal, as the dish can only receive.

Options are limited dude. DSL is not as good as cable, but for basic surfing needs, it is fine. SBC had a really easy setup process and was up and running in 15 minutes, start to finish.

    gotbuick What, me worry?

I have recently recanted to "the Man" myself. I hated going to Comcast, but it was that or the wait forever dial-up.

Unfortunately there was no other high-speed provider in my area.

You might check into Verizon. :Do No:

You could get a wireless card for your laptop and park next to an office building or a library. Free internet!

Cable is faster than DSL, depending on how many people are on your loop. I'm out in the country and the other day, about 2 am I checked my cable speed and I was getting about 5.3 Mbps, which is about 660 KBps. I just checked it right now and I'm getting 4.6 Mbps, about 586 KBps. You'll never get that fast with current DSL. They are only just now coming out with 3.0 Mbps residential service and only in select areas. I wonder if you need to even buy any phone service for a DSL line? If you do, just get the basic of basics, i.e. a dial tone which should be about $10-$15/ month. Once you get the broadband connection, you can also go the VoIP route for phone service. For $15/month, you can get 500 minutes/month to anywhere in the U.S. I'm going to be switching to that next month.

I've had SBC DSL for 2 years now, price started at $29.95, then the year after it changed to $26. Not available in all area's.
