Is a '72 wired like a '71?

    Hello Everyone,

I'm in the process of working on my '71 Skylark Ragtop and noticed that the wire harness had been abused. I'm putting it back togther the "correct" way as I have an extra '72 harness and car to help out.

The question is I noticed that '72 cars are wired for power through the fusable links that attach to the starter solenoid.

The '71car I have is not wired that way, should it be?

Not looking to win a show, just make a safe driver.

PS - It seems like the '71 I have has no fusable links at all.

    Thanks,

    Chad

Absolutely, the 71 should have fusible links. They can save your car in the event of a major short.

Are they wired in like the '72 at the solenoid?

Yes, one fusible link for the headlights, one for the rest of the car.

    Thanks

    That is what I thought.

    I have a 72 Chasis Manual.

Will that be much different for a 71 car for the wiring schematics?

    Thanks Again

    Should be right on.

There are a couple small differences between 71 and 72 that may or may not affect the systems you are working on. The seat belt warning system is the biggest one, using a different neautral safety switch and soome underdash wire changes plus a plastic buzzer. Some of the connectors are slightly different too.

I'd have ot look to confirm, but the main dash harness to the front to back harness may have different connections too, that could be important if you are swapping out the dash harness. Easily fixed by moving pins.

    Small stuff like that.

    Thanks Gents,

I will be tracing the wiring this weekend to see just how much butchering was done.

Some things are working and some are not.

So far it has been just things like installing the idle stop solenoid connector on the oil pressure switch. Hmm I wonder why the red light is on. (Joke)

I fixed that with a tee off the block and now run a gauge (copper line) and the pressure switch.

I just didn't see the fusible links and I know how important they are.

Car is not bieng driven and the bat is out while I work on it.

Doing Rad core support and starting floors.

    Have a good weekend.

    Chad
