Is the Super turbine a powerglide?

    All,
I have a 66 Skylark that I added headers mild cam to the factory Buick 300 V8, we just freshened her up besides for that, but now when you put into gear it wants to stall on me?... My friend says I may need a new stall converter and we are wondering if this tranny is the same as a 2 speed powerglide?... As they are readily available.

Or if anyone else has anything that you can think of that may help besides for doing that?...

    Thanks
    Tom

    They are not the same.

I think that transmission will have a switch-pitch, in which case there is supposed to be an electric wire that goes from the brake pedal (somehow) to the transmission, so that it switches into high stall when you are at a stop.

    Thanks Bob!,
As I am sure you can tell, I am a rookie at this but still trying to get her running right again! I will look into that and see if thats my issue.

    Thanks!

I don't think you have a transmission or converter problem. Sounds like a vacuum leak to me.

The switch pitch switch(heheh, say that fast three times!!!) is on the intake manifold...

There are 2 versions of the "300" tranny, the SP and the ST

The "300" is, well, basically- a powerglide 2 speed inside a T-350 case.

The ST is the standard 2 speed, and it uses a T-350, T-400 torque converter. It's not a bad tranny, and can be "built up", but parts are hard to find, and to be perfectly honest with you, not really worth it since a T-350 will bolt into place.

The SP is a unique piece. It's the same as above, but uses a 2 speed torque converter that's actuated by a switch on the intake manifold. When you give it full throttle, the switch activates the special converter into high stall mode, giving you about a 3000 RPM stall speed. When you let up on it a little, it switches back down to the standard 1000 stall. This feature/tranny was used to "get a heavy car moving" from a dead stop.

If you have this tranny, and it works well,,, enjoy it. It really is a cool feature, and you can re-wire it to activate the high stall by a hand held switch or by connecting it to the brake pedal-tail light switch... There has been lots of talk of this type of tranny here on this board, and good info on it is easily found by doing a simple search.

If you have this tranny, an it goes bad..... FORGET IT!!! Parts are IMPOSSIBLE to find, but again, a T-350 is a bolt in.

What I [personally] think is cool is replacing an old 2 or 3 speed tranny with a 200R-4 4 speed automatic tranny. A little fabrication is nessecary, but it's not too hard, and there is a fantastic how-to located on www.buickperformance.com

Hope some of this helps... Good luck!
