Is there a chance it’s a real GSX

Local world of wheels show has a 70 GSX.
Lots of things look goofy like rusty headers, front end sitting too high, 4speed handle wrong and front spoiler pointed down.
Stage 1 emblem under the GSX emblem on grill. Granted anybody can do anything they want to there car and when they where 2 years old nobody would bat an eye at changes like that.
My question is there a way to tell if it’s real if I can’t see the vin?

The body trim tag is the quickest way to rule out a fake. If it’s a yellow car it’s easier to confirm as a real GSX.

    1970 Buick GSX Information

    1. Had the same power plant as a 1970 GS which was either a 350HP Standard 455 or 360HP Stage-1.
    2. Could not be purchased with a 350 c.i. engine
    3. Did not have a separate VIN identification (used the GS455 VIN identification).

    4. Special graphics package with hood stripes and side panel stripes.
    5. Front spoiler, rear spoiler, sport mirros, and hood tach unique to the GSX.
    6. Baffle as part of the front spoiler system.
    7. Holes drilled into the front framework for the front spoiler.
    8. Special emblems on the grill and dash pad.
    9. Black bucket seat interior only trim tag code 188.
    10. Came in only two colors Saturn Yellow (tag code Q-Q) and Apollo White (tag code 10-10).
    11. Came with a special padded steering wheel.
    12. Came with a slightly largerl trunk tension bar to support the spoiler.
    13. Was a mid year car produced between the months of February and June. The three digit number on the trim (cowl) tag below the TR and PNT is the month and week the body was made by fisher. (EX 04D would be fourth month fourth week). Most cars were produced at Buick within a two to three week window after the body was created.
    14. There were only 678 1970 Buick GSX produced.
    15. From the information gathered through the GSX registry VIN numbers range from approx. 446370H120000 to 446370H335000. Some of the VIN numbers are within 30 of each other but most of them are stand alone numbers.
    16. From the information gathered through the GSX registry the cowl tag numbers range from approx. ST 70 44637FL1 175000 BDY to ST 70 44637FL1 288000 BDY. Some of these numbers are consecutive and seem to be in groups of 20 to 40 but with the few cars that are in the registry it is very difficult to get exact.

Items to look for to help determine if it is a real 1970 GSX or not.

    1. Paperwork is always the first option. Ask the owner for original bill of sale, Protect-o-plate, body production sheet (usually found on the gas tank), Broadcast sheet (usually found in the drivers side pillar tucked up under the dash pad), or any other identifying paperwork.
    2. The stripes down the side of the car had a small miss match directly above the rear wheel well.
    3. The stripes toe in at the front edge of the hood.
    4. There is one weep hole in the rear spoiler.
    5. There are holes cut into the trunk lid to place the bolts for the rear spoiler.
    6. There are holes drilled in the front part of the frame to mount the front spoiler.
    7. There is and X stamped into the support plate of the Sports mirrors.
    8. The body plate on the Cowl should have exterior paint as either Q-Q for Saturn Yellow or 10-10 for Apollo White. The Saturn Yellow color is unique to this car the Apollo White is not.
    9. There should be a 3 inch hole for the hood tach or have a hood tach.
    10. The dash pad emblem says GSX.
    12. There is a quarter panel decal on each side of the car.
    13. The trunk tension bar was slightly bigger then the standard car (needs to be checked with a micrometer).
    14. The steering wheel is padded.

Quick glance at the VIN and trim tag will cover the most obvious-is it a Flint built GS455 (446370H) with paint code 10-10 or Q-Q. If those aren’t all ‘yes’ then it’s not.

    Thanks for the info.
The way the car is parked you can’t see the vin.
I will look again today at the other items listed.
I believe it’s been repainted so the stripe alignment may be out the window. It is Saturn yellow.

If it’s Saturn yellow all you need to do is see if it has a QQ paint code on the trim tag.

This was as close as I could get, but the owner says it’s real. He also said stuff like they only made 150 4 speeds and they came from the factory with edlebrock headers. Lol
So I don’t really believe everything he said 1B510D4E-0E5F-418F-BC1D-5DEF347CAF40.jpeg

Some GSX's had a rivet holding the tach on. Most people doing a clone wouldn't bother to do that. Or would know even. If that is in fact a rivet I see in the pic. It's a bit fuzzy

Spoke with Rob yesterday, the GSX is real one family car out of Oakland Ia. I tried to buy this car 2 times once in the 70's and again in the 80's. First time it was in sad shape, and not all together, second time it was back together, old car has had a rough life, but have to admire the family for keeping it all this time, good to see it out.
